Howdy! A friend and I have access to piles of broken PS2s, perhaps 50 or more. We want to fix as many as we can. Along the way we want to document the various model types, take detailed pictures, specific fix guides, etc.

First question: does something like this exist? Some sites I'm collecting:
    http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/ps2version/ps2id.htm
    http://www.tweak3d.net/articles/ps2repair/2.shtml
    http://psx-scene.com/forums/f20/ps2-laser-repair-tweak-guide-36016/

Can you supply some accurate websites?

Second question: would you like to join us? Have a broken PS2 of your own? We'll try to find the specific model and we'll fix together!

    Thanks!

What's the model number(s)? As I said I'll try to focus on that type first.

If you are willing to, please contribute to the PS2Ident project. Unlike the PSP, we still do not have a collection on every single PlayStation 2 model in existence.

If you don't already have them, getting your hands on the leaked PlayStation 2 service manuals will probably be helpful.

Adjustment of the optical block (laser) seems to be done with measurement tools (I.e jitter meter) and the SONY service tools. The homebrew equivalent of the service tools is PMAP.

Due to not having the proper tools, it seems that the use of a multimeter and trial-and-error is a common practice.

Specifically, we need submissions that are as accurate (I.e from un-modded sets) and as complete as possible. We need to know the Mainboard model number (to tag the information against), chassis (if the automatic detection is wrong), and the names for all misidentified chips.

As usual, special thanks to all contributors!

Well, when I a going to mod a console - I can run PS2Ident, then seeing as I am opening it anyway - can get you all the chip part numbers.

As a link would be helpful, I added a link to your thread. If you'd rather link an external site, feel free to modify.

Sounds like an interesting project... both the tool and fixing the PS2s. Well, that's more laborious than anything ;)

Hello all! I am helping Josiah with this undertaking. I am pretty stoked to add to the PS2Ident project with hi-res pictures and detailed board info. I would also love to track down as many of the factory resources and tools as possible to help with repairs. Im sure i'll have tons of questions. Thanks in advance!

There are a bunch of service manuals online. You can also find fuse map pictures, which give you locations.

So I decided to disregard a few guides and disassemble a SCPH-30001 V5 to see if I could adjust the voltage. I think I found the pots I need to adjust, but would like some confirmation. I know I have a low chance of fixing it, considering all of the ribbon cables I have to reconnect, but I want to try.

Are those the two pots I need to adjust under the orange label? If so, which pots are for adjusting CD and DVD? Any tips on which direction to start turning?

This PS2 doesn't read blue disks.

You are best to just change the laser units. They are cheap and blindly adjusting pots is not wise.

However, have you tried cleaning the lense with some ipa and a cotton bud/qtip?

I'd like to repair the PS2s as cheaply and correctly as possible by avoiding part swapping. I also would love to learn how to properly diagnose and fix optical disk drives because all of the 90s and 00s consoles are failing, and there's no guarantee there will be cheap replacement parts.

    Lasers are like $5 delivered.

Adjusting the pot isn't repairing them as "correctly as possible" either. You are maybe just extending the life (if you even get it to read anything at all!) , but if you are selling them, you are basically just "making them work" enough for the buyer not to know until it's too late.

I refurb/repair/mod/sell quite a few ps2's, I am only offering advice that's based on how long I've been doing it. But you are free to ignore and just tweak pots if you prefer.

Just so you can see I am not just making this up, below are pics of current batch of refurbed consoles and batch of "to do" consoles. Also some pics of my mod installs for good measure.

Hey, sorry, I think I came off a little cocky. I tend to get a fix in mind and stop listening to reason. I appreciate you responding and setting me straight :)

I'm taking your advice and shopping around for replacement lenses. From what I understand the KHS-400C is good for V1-V10. Is this true? If not, do you have a list of the laser assembly for each type of board?

Again, I appreciate your expertise. Thank you!

You cannot just change the optical block from a SANYO to SONY model directly (unless you reconfigure the console), so you should make a 1:1 replacement of the original. Different optical blocks were used over various models with no clear pattern, so please do not assume that model X has optical block type Y.

Very clean work and soldering skills. What brand of soldering iron do you use?

Just a hakko clone (black jack bk2000+)

I am working on upgrading to a station that will drive multiple different handles though, but it's taken longer than planned as not much free time recently.

Op, I get my lasers from some sellers on aliexpress. Took a little trial and error to find suppliers that seem reliable. But ones i have been using for awhile have been fine quality wise.
