Probably a stupid question... but

    Can you use something like:

    This

to connect a console to a LCD monitor with HDMI input?

Or would a component to d-sub cable work without anything else? Can it be done without an expensive scaler?

The console has to have component output (anything last-gen and above).
That should work though if I didn't miss anything.

That should work fine then, as long as your monitor can handle the resolutions (particularly 480i/p). The box is a converter, not a scaler.

It'll work with the PS3 (HDMI) and the Xbox 360 (VGA or HDMI), you would have issues with trying to connect a Wii up to the machine. Your best bet would be the Neoya X2VGA2 (and making sure that the Wii outputs in 480p)

PS2 could use a VGA cable but you would need software to force games to support 480p (as the monitor won't sync down to 480i...) there is software out there like the Blaze VGA kit else a RGB SCART to VGA (or line doubler) the Neoya X2VGA box won't work as a lot of games don't support progressive video.

XBox would just require the either a Neoya VGA box (just plugs straight in, gives a fantastic picture on a Monitor) or a Neoya X2VGA box and a HDTV kit.

Other consoles would be better with a RGB SCART to VGA convertor.
