I got this knock off Chinese 3.5" TFT backup camera screen from eBay for $20.

    Here's the specs:

    3.5 inch monitor
    LS-350B-L
    DC 12V
    Made in China
    6978012807097824

Problem with it is that it will show video but the video is black and white with very little color on my model 2 Genesis. Both my revision 0 and revision 1.7 do the same. They are both NTSC U models. The screen claims to show NTSC and PAL video.

    Image of the Genesis:

you can see a little red in the image on some of the sprites but the rest is B&W with vertical lines running through it.

Same screen on my USA model Dreamcast:

The colors are there and very good. The images are blurry but the quality is good despite using the composite connection. Any ideas as to what's going on?
The Sonic and Knuckles as well as the Sonic Adventure 2 games used for my test are both NTSC U model games running in standard resolution. The screen resolution is 320x240 so it should be right for the Genesis running on composite.

It's probably either a bad screen or something to do with the settings.

I think it might be the Genesis since the screen auto detects the video settings and you can't change settings past brightness, tint, contrast, language, contrast, and reset settings.

Hmm, I'd say that the screen is probably at fault but first see if you can use someone elses console to see if it is your console at fault.

I say try it on several consoles. If you keep getting black and white then it's the screens problem. Likely, because most of China uses PAL, they probably overstated the specs just because most people wouldn't notice. That, or something was lost in translation.

I plan to use it with a model 3 Genesis so 'i'll try it on that once I get one. Strange that it works properly on my NTSC Dreamcast if it is a PAL only screen. Might be like derekb said and be an issue with the Genesis since it puts out 240i over the composite plug. Oh well. If it is an issue with the video method on Genesis then I'll just have to use it for something else.

The screen might only be capable of displaying 'modified NTSC' aka NTSC4.43, hence the B&W picture with a pure NTSC (3.58MHz) feed. I think PAL60 is often classed as NTSC4.43 also.

So by that logic then, my NTSC-U Dreamcast is putting out a NTSC 4.43 signal? It shows up full screen in color.

the 3.5" I used has a 480 native res and just interlaces the genny input to proper res, idk it could be soemthing else, but thats my initial guess? if you know the genny works and nothing else causes an issue, thats my thought

Genny works properly on my 20 inch Toshiba CRT made 2001. So does the Dreamcast. Dreamcast works properly on the LCD but Genesis doesn't. I'm at a loss too. Everything is going through composite.
