    Hi all,

ancient lurker but first time that i have to post for a problem of my own.
I got a ps2 slim from somebody that insisted it has 'one of the good' chips fitted 'with the menu' lol.
It appears that the installed chip is a MODBO V1.1 and the installation while not the most professional ever, looks ok to me. The problem i am having is that the ps2 will always show a blank screen when turned on. If at this stage i reset the console, i always get to the sony dashboard with the browser etc. It does play original discs and i have not tried ps2 backups as i do not have any (but will try in a while) and it will also play original ps1 discs. However, it does not seem to play burned ps1 discs.

Note that i can go to the 'matrix' configuration screen (it does not show any version though, so it is an old one) by holding the triangle + circle buttons during boot but no matter what choices i make it does not affect the blank screen on startup or booting ps1 burnt discs.

    So my question is twofold:

    1. Is there anything i can do to fix it so it boots first time all the time? By reading around in other threads i have seen people suggesting reflashing the fw on the chip, but not sure which fw it would be for this particular chip and where to find/how to flash.
    2. Is this chip capable of playing both ps1 and ps2 backups or i have to get rid of it and solder another one in it's place? I would hate to have to do this as all connections are tiny, but given the chip is already installed, if another one is compatible wire-to-wire, then it would be less of a pain.

Attaching pictures of the chip and the whole installation.

Thanks in advance for any input :)

1.The only way to upgrade the version of fw is replace the whole modchip, in matrix configuration screen should have a 'BOOT MODE' option, try set it to AUTO.
2.It should capable for both PS1 and PS2 backups.

Thanks, will probably do that then. No idea if the chip has gone bad or is some of the connections but will check again all of them carefully to make sure.

it would be good if you have a PS1 that is chipped and could test your backups in that , if they work they've been burned correctly.

Hi, i do have a modded psOne and it plays the copy fine, so it is something to do with the ps2 modchip. After all, the cold boot each time results in a blank screen, only resetting it after this, works. It is either a soldering point that broke, or the chip went bad.

I'd just replace it with a Modbo 4.0. Simple, no headache solution.
