I'm trying to make a partition in a Dell laptop with vista using Disk Management, and when I try to shrink volume in the HDD to make said partition I get a "Access Denied" windows. Any idea of what could be the problem?
Any other partitions methods will format the drive, which means that I've to make a backup/disk image, then reinstall, too much work considering Vista can make the partition itself. So, any suggestions?
If I remember right you can just format the partition vs the disk. You just don't go into the actual installing. Weird that the built in disk manager thing wouldn't be working.
Dunno, I get the "WARNING: this will erase all the contents on the disk" And yeah its weird that it doesnt works, I searched everywhere and cant find someone who had the same problem and how to fix. I already removed all those security locks vista has, so I'm out of ideas. BTW, Dell support are the worst, they dont do shit unless is exclusively part-related.
I just set a partition a bit ago on a dell inspiron mini 12 with an XP disc. Damn, the mini 12 is pretty cool, price is a little lame though. My grandma got one and I think they should market it to normal PC users because it's still cheaper then most PC/laptops and it's perfect for normal PC usage...and tiny! Screen rocks.
It came with XP. I wanted to throw Ubuntu or one of those netbook aimed OSs but I'll leave XP on it, she might have trouble using something else simply because of the fact so many sites need IE. I stuck Opera on there and she loves it but sometimes I get a call because so and so won't work with it. I don't want to deal with it really, lol.
If you use Ubuntu, Firefox is included and works with most everything IE does. Opera is pretty nice, but a lot of sites don't like it. As for the partition manager, make sure you're running as Administrator. I admittedly don't have much experience with the one included with Windows, though. I tend to use gParted. It make also have something to do with the fact that you're trying to shrink the partition you're currently using... If this is the case, you'll have to use something like gParted or Partition Magic. Shrinking NTFS partitions is rather risky, though, so make sure anything important has been backed up.
I actually totally forgot about FF. I guess that could do it. It's really stupid that Comcast and etc. seriously won't let you pay bills and stuff because there site works with nothing but IE. I forgot FF could probably work around that. Maybe later I'll throw Ubuntu on or something. It's a cool little notebook, but setting it up and using it and stuff, I'm kind of glad I just have my laptop since it's not way huge or anything, but this 12" and probably even more the 8" netbooks must rock for school.
If your trying to shrink the Partition and you get that error it can mean several things, the most common is that you've got data stored at the end of the partition that is in use and can't be moved. A boot time defrag using O&O Defrag or PageDefrag, etc. should correct the issue and allow you to shrink away. You could also just use GParted, to shrink and ignore the data in use problem I'm guessing you have an Inspiron. Inspiron support is trained to not give a shite unless its hardware related or a simple OS issue like you've lost the icon to Outlook. If you want real support from Dell buy an XPS/Studio, Latitude, or Optiplex avoid Inspiron at all costs. Seeing as your already have an inspiron and your stuck with it I recommend doing some fishing, if the tech your talking to doesn't care what the problem is hang up and call back, there is always someone tucked away in the corner that loves fixing these kind of problems, you just have to find one. And if that doesn't work, Escalate. Those higher up on the tech food chain know how to fix most every problem, you just have to annoy them enough to get them to do it.
I wouldn't say that, I use Opera everyday and I don't even remember the last time a site didn't work for me.
Same here but when I stick it on non tech peoples PC's they always somehow run into problems. It seems like a lot of online billing shit such as Comcast doesn't seem to work too well. It's usually just stupid stuff but pretty dumb in 2009 when some site is telling you to download IE6.
