    nice. so what's the button for? some kind of reset? and what was on the memory card? :)

    That looks a lot like the official Sega 4x memory unit.
    That card had four individual memory banks which you switched via the button, which is what I presume this proto does as well.

    i think the button switches between the memory banks 1-4, as seen on later 3rd party memory units!

    Indeed.
    But the PCB inside looks pretty much identical to what you'd find in a shipping VMU, so this must have been a proto that was pretty far along in development except for the outside casing.

    ok. I've actually never had a DC memory card in my possession and it was a bit under a year a go that I actually got a DC for the first time. So I can't really call myself a DC expert. ;)

    that definetely looks like official 4mb Dreamcast memory card, switch is responsible for switching between each mb of data(there are four naturally).

    I think the four might be indication LEDs, not switches?
