] I got this controller last year with a launch team xbox bundle off ebay. I have never seen one like it (although that doesn't mean much). It seems to be very close to a production duke with a few small but notable differences. First obviously is the jewel. It is very good looking with a green metallic disc and xbox etched into the back of the bezel. Moving around to the back, its serial number is only five digits and in the lower field all it says is made in malaysia, and dakota. There are no other markings such as the fcc or ce markings you see on production models. Even the green dukes that go with the launch system have these markings. Other than that the differences are very minimal. The plug end seems to be a production piece minus the raised xbox lettering on them. The controller disconnects are made out of translucent green plastic rather than black on the production ones, and there is nothing inline between the disconnect and the plug. On the production models there is something in between the two (fuse maybe?). My gut feeling is this has to be a proto, but possibly it is a limited production or very early model. Any info is appreciated.
I'm not an xbox person, but I've heard the dakota pads cam from the early dev units that didn't even look like xbox yet. (Tower style alpha) I wouldn't call it a proto, if it was, microsoft would have labeled it so. It's just very early. Believe it or not, I found my at gamestop for $5.00
Thanks, man $5.00 thats quite a find. So I guess that makes it uncommon versus rare. Still to find one at Gamestop thats incredible. Anyone have any idea how many of these there are?
