Hello all, I stumbled onto this site while I was looking for information on a controller I recently aquired. It's a prototype gamecube controller. Some differences from the production model include:

    green B button, kidney shaped
    Blue A button
    No Z button
    handles slimmer
    clear back cover
faded sticker on back with "ver. B" visible
start button square shaped and red
plug at end of cord is phone jack / cable modem jack thingy shaped (sorry, I'm REALLY not a techie so I have no idea what its called.)
Nintendo Gamecube DS5 3/4 speed written on front

now I'm not much of a techie, so I was wondering if someone could help me shed some light on what the DS5 stands for or what the 3/4 speed means.

If I had to guess, the DS5 may be a production code to tell which version it is. Interesting, though...

  3. -Yep 'DS5' is the revision number.

-The '3/4 speed' (three quarters) is related to the speed of the controller compared to the final controller that runs at full speed.

    Hope this helps.

Well you weren't lying, it wont work on a normal cube!

I would have gutted the thing, and added a normal connection (keeping the proto bits so I could restore it)

The 3 "kidney" buttons look, and I would imagine play a lot better!

    Awesome. :D Nice pics.

Sorry about being nit-picky, but you listed at "clear back cover" as a difference from the production models. There was an official Gamecube controller (available at launch in the US, haven't seen one in a while though) with the clear back as well.

My Japanese gamecube also came with a pad that had a clear back.

the nr / npdp readers come with these exact same controllers? The guy selling em had actually won 5 different prototype looking controllers, all of them different. He was almost going to sell me one for a tenner but he backed down and listed it on ebay when he asked people for advice.

Now this might not have anything to do with the controlers but in the pictures that assembler posted of the dolphin gamecube devs (the computer lookin ones) on the top they had a sticker.

If i remember right the sticker said

    "controller: Full speed"

and so on with the specs..

The npdp GBOX, DEV and such use normal looking controller connections.

What depends on if you have a beta kit, pc style tower, etc.

The early n64 controllers were all rj11 style as well.

Im not sure Promophile was the seller, but i bought this controller now.
Is it possible to build an adapter to use it with normal GC/wii?
I think about using a Rj11 extension and GC plug.
