this is really interesting! I think arcade protos - especially unlreleased ones - are far more interesting than console specific protos. but that's just my opinion.. is it one of the most expensive PCBs in the world at over 1000 dollars? I thin alot of arcade PCBs - especially the old ones - can go for that kind of money in japan. maybe I'm wrong, don't know - but I did sell an old PCB to a japanese collector for 1k a couple of years back.
Not even close. For starters, new games (even on somewhat old hardware) retail for higher than that when they're released. -Ketsui w/ copied artwork has been going for 150,000 yen + recently. -Dodonpachi DOJ Black Label (rumored to have a production run of 100) will be pricey if you get the full kit. -A boxed kit of Dangun Feveron went for 200,000 not long ago. -Gain Ground (System24) runs about 150,000 yen in Akihabara. -Original Gradius is about 250,000 yen if you're lucky enough to nab one -Loads of others
yeah like GP said there are tons of PCBs in the +$1000 range.. even if you dont collect kits. i think thisone was a real find if it is somewhat finished and playable?
Two reasons these are expensive is because one they are quite famous games but mainly because Gain Ground being on System 24 came on a floppy disc and a lot of these have lost data, unlike most other of the non quiz System 24 games there was no non floppy version of this game. Gradius because the original run was produced with Bubble Memory which needs to warm up before it can be used (one reason that the game has a Now Warming up screen...), bubble memory although a cheap form of memory to store data did have it's problems like data erasing with magnetic fields, so probably <1% of the originals survive and there was a much smaller run of the game using standard ROMs.
They're expensive b/c they're rare. Gain Ground pops up from time to time... I have seen it go as low as 800,000 yen. You have to have a 22khz monitor though, which is why I've never bothered w/ it or Crackdown. I've never heard of the floppy datat being an issue w/ Gain Ground, as it can be copied to another floppy. The one I saw was Roms only (from memory). I won't even try to pretend I know how many versions there are. Even Nemesis, the US one, goes for some 150,000 yen or something when it pops up. Here' a Nintendo Version w/ no bids yet.
Mak Japan have a bubble memory version of Gradius for only(!) 63,000.... Most Nemesis boards are rom boards, a few bubble memory ones exist in Japan a collector told me about 90% of boards were bubble memory boards and most ended up in the bin as they kept breaking down.
i guess this is as close to a gradius kit as youll come these days.. http://page16.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/u14520990 wonder where itll end..
Judging by the picture the Spriggan PCB soundsection seems to consist of one OKI6295 and two YM2151 and in stereo as it has two volume pots... the music must have been something special i imagine
