Hello my fellow game dev friends/geeks. I seem to have come across a couple of old mastering disks for ps1, or possible ps2. These look like regular CDRs, only they have the playstation logo on the front, are black/grey, and have some kind of number on them. If i remember correctly i saw those in a list of old dev stuff offered by sony, and priced at like 10£ each. Sorry i have no pics, but is there a chance someone could maybe clarify what they are, and link to pictures of there is any so i can confirm that's what they are? also, since i'm not really that much into ps dev, i was thinking of letting them go. how much are these still worth? thanks
If these are what you say they are, I'll take one or two off your hands I know I've seen some pictures... gotta find them :S
i know, i don't have that many posts yet. yeah i have about 20 of these although i'm not sure if all of them are going yet. i promised someone else some. i don't even know whats so special about them so i was going to find out.
alright guys, here is what those look like. i'm still not sure if those are ps1 or 2, or how much these are worth. any info? Thanks guys.
edit: found a post by assembler here: http://assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10141 according to this, these are quite pricey, and they're ps1. any takers? Thanks
Yes, those are PS1. According to ASSEMbler's thread, these came in pack of 10 for USD200, so that would be USD20 a piece (if you're going with the original price). If you're still considering selling these, please let me know the price per unit.
as i said i promised them to someone, but there's a few. also i'm not sure if the price should go up due to rarity, or down because these are obsolete also maybe i'll sell bulk. are these useful to anyone or just a nostalgic item?
These were intended to be used by the developers when sending the disc to Sony for massive production (or at least that's what Mastering discs are generally used for :S). I don't think they have any real use nowadays apart from collectible... You can use them as regular CD-Rs of course, but you'd be wasting a piece of history, so to say
yeah be interesting to have some as collectors pieces but i doubt they would ever be used again, price is a strange one as its only a blank cd and its not actually got any data on so your paying essentially for the artwork and the physical disc itself p.s. nice find
The point of these discs is have the data for the game master in a media that SONY know the exact specifications of as it's manufactured under specific parameters. The point is then, make sure that no bits would be read wrong from the disc when readying the glass master for duplication.
Yes, but that is pretty irrelevant now, as Sony wont be making any more glass masters for PS1 games. So currently there is little use other than collectors as now, it is little more than a CD-R if actually used.
thanks for that i did not realise they used them for that reason i assumed it was just their own brand they wanted you to use, i still think that they are nothing but a collectors item now, unless someone was going to do some PSX dev and have the master replicated i cant see any use for them, nice to have tho
well either way. i will see if i can get some of these out to you guys. if i do these will end up on the marketplace so keep your eyes peeled for those. ill also post here again. i have no use for these so other than giving them away i do not really care, but i'm quite interested in all kinds of console dev (mostly xbox) so i thought i'd write up on those.
appreciate you posting the info mate, always nice to see stuff like this come up after all these years
I'm not convinced there really was a technical reason to use them. They could have just as easily told you to use a specific brand that they had QA'd. It is more likely that they just wanted you to think carefully before burning one, because of the extra cost. Probably the most important reason is that the cd has areas for you to write (in pen) information they need. So they won't just get a cd turn up in the post that they don't know what to do with.
rip the foil of, take a permanent marker, then u write somethin like "biohazard 1.5, for internal use only on it" grab ur cam and post the picture on all resident evil sites u know. hahahaha
