About a month a go I bought a bare PSX at the local Goodwill for $5.00. I get it home, test it, and it turns on. Problem is that the bios screen doesn't seem to display. So I just get a black screen. The disc drive doesn't seem to work either. Anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong?
It's fucked? Try a game in it, and make sure the hole in the top right of the CD drive is pushed down, and that your video cable works. Use a standard yellow, white, red cable, no S-video or component. Also open er up and look for bad points, etc.
Tested it again. Laser doesn't move, gets to the SCE screen with no sound and stays put. The green LED turns on.
Could be bad chip that controls the motors. Does the lens move? Check all the fuses on the mainboard.
I had a similar issue with 3 PSOnes and I accidentally fixed them all breaking a plastic part . I'm not really sure why, but this piece after some time locks the lens in a certain position and it's impossible to the motor to bring it back to the center. Trying to make something by byself before taking it to a shop or something, I softly pushed the lens to the center and I broke a plastic piece (you had to see my face when it happened xD). For that time I was sure it was broken, but I tried turning it on for a last time. The game worked great and I still have that unit working (that was around 2003). I did this bestiality with 3 units, but I don't reccomend it to anyone (those units weren't mine, I'd never do it with that was mine)
It wouldn't move at all or it would get stuck? I might try removing the plastic around the lens if that's the case.
