Ok, i did some playing around last night, seems i gave all of my SCPH-100x's to charity last year so i was playing with DTL-100x and DTL-110x. The 100x sounded like crap, there was some strange cutoff in the treble, i'm going to chalk that down to incomplete audio hardware but it sounded like crap.

The DTL-110x sounded pretty damn good, a hell of a lot better than the xbox i had setup.

Here's what i listened to, it all sounded pretty good:

Blue Men Group - The complex
    The Killers - Hot Fuss
E Muziki - (This awesome 2 person clasical string band)
Ramstein - Mutter and their second album that i can't remember the name of.

Since that sounded pretty good and i'm not about to tear appart a debugger, i went out and bought a SCPH-1001. Unfortunately i don't know what got spilled on the case, but it has red an green splashes all over it, so i also picked up some primer and automotive spray paint. This weekend, i'm going to pop out the opamp and see how it sounds.

I'll document the project and tell you how it goes.

@OE: Just for that, i'm going to do all of my testing w/ velvet underground = P

A friend of mine used to use his SCPH-100X (1, i believe) for an absolutely beastly stereo setup he had, speakers and amp working together in watts in the the thousands. Sounded great, although not something he did on purpose. Not an audiophile, don't remember.

Additionally, I remember my SCPH-1000 sounding awesome, better than any console I had next to it when I still had it (including Dreamcast). Calling attention to it, most people claimed that it was just louder and not any crisper.

Just a quick update, i grabbed a wifi signal for a few minutes.

I popped out the opamp and did a blind test, the 3 people who listened to it all thought it sounded "clearer" without the caps. One of the things i noticed is that i could hear the guitar pick hit the string on the modified ps1 where i couldn't hear that on the unmodified ps1. I usually think that audiophiles are insane, but it makes sense in this case.

I'll probably mod up a few and offer them in the marketplace if anyone is interested... is anyone interested?

I was a little disappointed with the Dreamcast CD player to be honest. The Saturn one was a lot better. (which pees all over the useless crappy looking PSX one).

What about the 3DO, Jag CD and Neo geo CD?
