By RCA out you mean individual phono jacks for composite video, left and right audio?

If yes, then there is a model that already has this. SCPH-100x models.

And yes it is possible to add them on later models. Get a copy of the pinout of the AV port and wire up RCA jacks to the corresponding point(s) on the AV out port.

Why? They sell S-Video cables for $4 on Amazon. And you can't go to any game store without seeing the official cable.

There are some people that just like composite more than RGB.

For music playing? Then for the love of God get the 100X instead, you can modify that to sound amazing :)

There's an excellent guide on how to do this here:
    http://deutschermanfred.de/en/mainboard/

In the guide he says that he can't hear the difference between normal capacitors and audiophile ones. But when I emailed him, he said that I should go for the audiophile ones, so now I have ordered Mundorf capacitors, and I'm looking forward to hearing if it makes a difference or not.

I haven't done any modifications to the power supply yet, but I will soon. I have a suitable PSU from a 5552 that I'll use for this :)

I guess this only really matter for those of us who care enough about music to still buy it on CDs. Rather than listening to it on iTunes and Spotify which I believe are still in lousy quality compared to CDs :/ It should make a noticeable difference if you just want to play games on it, but it's up to you to decide if that's worth it :)

The mod I link to? It won't because it uses a different (and inferior) kind of Digital to Analog Converter (DAC). You can add RCA outputs to any PS1 easily, but you won't get the improved audio the first model offers :)

Were you going to use it for music or video games? If you're only using it for games, then I would just add RCA outputs to the one you have now. If you're somehow not happy with that you can get a 1002 later :)

How Kill a rare playstation with an old and useless conjecture. (you must see ebay.de)

P.S: if you do that mod, your PS after is completely useless for gaming

How is the 100X rare? It's fine that you don't care about music, to each his own. And you're not forced to desolder the video encoder chip. I haven't, so it still play games just fine, although EU games, which is 50Hz and therefore not really playable at all ;)

I wouldn't waste my time trying to modify the original PS1 model to be some audiophile CD playing rig. There is no evidence to backup what is being said because it's all subjective and the problem with that is confirmation bias as well as another bias where people will rate their decisions higher than the decisions they didn't make regardless of reasoning or external subjectivity. The girlfriend you have is better than the girlfriend you don't because that other girl probably has herpes and is bipolar (or whatever excuse you'll make up).

Fact is there are better CD players out there. I have to laugh at "audiophile grade capacitors"; someone is making some good money fleecing people.

It is a nice novelty at least. For the price of a SCPH-1002 (£5?) you can have a little bit of fun.

I never said that the PS1 can be modified to equal the best CD-players ever made. That would be retarded. I simply stated that it can be modified to sound amazing, and that it does. Compared to the sound of my Denon CD-player there's a world of difference. The sound is much warmer and you can hear details you never could before. The bass is a bit louder, but that's a given when I use the OPA2134 as op-amp, but it also sounds much deeper, which is good for Rock and Metal. But what sounds best is of course purely subjective...

There are many people who claim that a modified PS1 does sound like a very high-end CD-player. I assume they have experience with those. I, personally have not, but I'm just very excited about the audio quality I can get out of this thing for the amount of money I've spent. I've never compared audiophile capacitors to regular ones before, but I won't judge them either, before I've heard them myself...

There are also those who claim they can hear a noticeable difference in capacitors, this guy (http://www.humblehomemadehifi.com/Cap.html) have tested quite a few and according to him they each do color the sound in various ways. Surely he would have come to the same conclusion as you, if they sounded all the same?

Since I have not compared any myself, I cannot rule out that he's wrong and you are right. But I hope you don't mind me asking; What experience do you have with audiophile capacitors?

    lol audiophile capacitors. Hahaha

any high quality cap will work just the same as these "exclusive" caps..
audiophile anything doesn't mean much, you just want to use high quality components, I bet if you try and compare the price of an "exclusive audiophile" capacitor and a nice high quality one that has no mention of audiophine in the description, I bet the price differance will be huge!

its just a marketing term that people got sucked into, remember monster cables hahahaha

Seriusly, high-end CD-player (compared to?), audiophile caps (wft!?)...
Trust me, there are all no-sense words....
