Ok so I have 3 SCPH-1002 model PS1's. I bought them all faulty for the same reason that they won't read discs properly. "HAH!" I thought, I'll just buy new lasers for them and they'll be sweet. BARGIN! But no... I swear they have all rallied against me, one even gave me an electric shock (ok maybe thats my fault for not turning it off.. but hey they are being evil). :-( Fun Fact: 1 of the old laser's in one of them was turning backwards! So I bought a new ACM laser. Installed it... hmm a couple of discs work, my others don't... and it's making a little rattly sound. Maybe it's just a faulty new drive. Then I bought another. Same problem, again a bit rattly during some loads. FVM's still dodgy when the game loads. Maybe these ACM lasers are really crap. Well I got a BAM laser from a 102. Changed the covers over so they fit(mind you this laser loaded Colin McRea Rally fine, the game i've been using for testing). And guess what STILL THE SAME and now even this laser is rattly... I'm sure it wasn't when I had it in the PSone. So I have concluded that I cannot be the laser. Now the other 2 do the exact same things... some load others don't... rattle rattle rattle... you get the picture. Has anyone had any issues like this before? Is there another problem the 1002's a prone to?
I posted this link somewhere else here, but i use this method. Works great on all 1000 series. http://dogbreath.de/PS1/LaserAlignment/Laser.html
Thats the one I've been looking at. I tried it and for a second everything was perfect... disc worked, FMV with no skipping then I hit the reset on the PS to make sure it wasn't a fluke... and well... it was. But I'll try again. Do all the laser units of the PS1/PSone require the same power settings? Because as I said, I've got a PSone BAM laser in there.
