Always been wondering, are the PS1 (original) Serial numbers on the back, lined up after production or just veeery random? I've never seen a number higher then 945xxxx.

has there ever been like a serial, "C0000044" and what do the letters infront stand for? on my european ones it always says "C" but in different regions it's A and B and S and even U.
and if they are just random, why enter a random number for each console? wouldn't there be duplicates then?

What is the lowest Serial Number you have seen?

is there a "VIN" decoder out there'

Here are some examples, both of these serials i found on ebay. as you can see, one is 1,916.417 and the other is 9,161.192
    SCPH-9002 - C1916417
    SCPH-9002 - C9161192

They could be random without duplicates if they print a set of numbers and then randomly assign those to consoles, or after they've manufactured them they don't try to keep sequential numbers together all the way through the supply chain.

Quite often serial numbers start at quite a high number, this is probably to hide the true number of units manufactured.

I noticed that the DTL Debugging models have like no letter infront and only like 30x.xxx  maybe they were made in a few thousand copies! :D
