I'm aware that you can't save a PS1 game to a PS2 memory card (something I learnt the hard way after a few hours on FF7 without saving). So I hunted all over my local town for a PS1 card and eventually found one. It's not official but it seems pretty decent and standard. It doesn't have pages or extra blocks. Anyway I started FF7 all over again and saved at the first chance I got. I booted up the game again and the save is gone, FF7 can see the memory card and save but they don't stay put. If I save and then carry on the game, when I get to the next save point the previous save is gone. So I tried another memory card, again non official with a different game and it's doing the same thing. Am I doing something wrong? My PS2 is a black PAL slimline. Please help, I'm desperate for some classic PS1 RPG'ing.
Does it have to be an official memory card? I don't see how it can make any difference, if it does it's going to be a nightmare finding one.
You will have a difficult time finding a official one these days, as there are tons of clones that look just like the real one. Anyway, i never had problems with my 2 PS1 memory cards. I have 1 that doesn't work at all, but it came on a lot of PS1 games i bought in the past. I think i'll make a keychain of it. Stay away of those big ones, that say have 8 times more capacity, as they use a page system and some games don't work with them. I would suggest you to try getting a used official one, from someone you trust / bought something before.
I've only even bought official memory cards. Pocketstation is my current main one. But yeah, grab an official card.
I find it funny that there have been so many horror stories with unoffical cards, particularly the "paged" ones, since I have a 240 block, 16 page memory card made by Blaze which has worked perfectly fine in the two years that I have had it. No save corruption, loss or anything. But then unlike the other cards it's advertized as having "true" memory, unlike the others which simply compress the saves to squeeze more on the card. The only issue that I've found with it is that Crash Bandicoot 3 doesn't seem to like it, and doesn't detect it. But I have four offical cards just in case anyway, which I use for any games such as that which I may come across.
That's exactly what i said. Some games don't work with those. The biggest problem is with those that try to look like the official one.
The problem is not that the PS2 has a block on non official memory cards. The real problem is that SONY removed the 8v pin from the memory card slot connector which on 7500x or newer is left unconnected. Pirated/counterfeit PS1 memory cards use 5V flash memory so they need the 8v pin to step down to 5v. Some cards even use 5v to power both the flash memory chip and MCU, resulting on a situation where the card isn't detected. Of course SONY did that to block the pirated cards, but the fix is super simple. (Connect the pin of the controller port with 8v to the now loose pin on the memory card slot.)
In my PS2 Slim SCPH 75004 don't read psx 3rd party memory cards too... in this version the 7.6v pin in gamepad connector is unused but i solved this connecting the Pin 3 of memmorycard slot 2 to the 5v of USB port, and it worked fine, and you only need to do this on 2nd slot, because they share the power to both memorycard slots. Right now my ps2 slim detects fine any psx/ps2 memorycard even if they are 3rd party. Thanks l_oliveira for sharing some of your knowledge about this problem. SCPH 75004 (040-12 motherboard) dont have any power at 3rd pin of gamepad, but as you can see the fix it's very simple.
Is it possible that your PS1 memory card is an old school one that's battery backed and the battery died? I haven't seen any PS1 memory cards like that, but I had an N64 memory card back in the day that was battery backed. Edit: this thread is from 2010!
I there, The issue is that . There is no batery, the question is, the oficial ones use the 5pin 3.6v and the 3rd party use 3pin 7,6 - 5v, and in some versions/in my case PS2 Slim SCPH 75004 (040-12 motherboard). My psx mc works like a charm in other version os PS2 FAT
