Is there anyway to update the firmware on a PS2 test? I don't know that newer firmware is necessarily better (is it?) but would assume fixes would have made it into later versions. Thanks!
There were DVD driver updates in the early models, but now you can't update it anymore. If you 're thinking of re-flashing the bios, that's not possible. The only thing you can do, if you're looking for intergated options and souch, is to mod your console with one of the advanced chips, like DMS4.
I wouldn't recommend installing a chip in a PS2 Test.I dont think you can update the firmware on a test ps2.On a modded retail yes.
I was never even able to update the ps1 driver in my earlier tests. I'm not sure it's possible either. On the other hand, i didn't actually try very hard.
The DVD Player, the Browser, the PS1 driver... all can be updated by having the latest version on the MC or HDD.] Yes, you can updated the DVD drivers. The DVD Player drivers installed on the MC (including latest releases, like the one that comes with the DVD Remote Control or with the HDD Utility Disc 1.10 disc) The browser is updated to 2.0, when you install the HDD Utility Disc 1.10 in the HDD (When the PS2 boots, it always checks if there's an HDD connected. If it's connected, he boots the browser installed on it and not the one on the system itself). The PS1 driver can be updated, but i think Sony never released any updates...
True, but does it work on a TEST? I couldn't get the HDD utility disc to run on my DTL-H10000 at all, master patched or not.
I have no idea, since i don't own a TEST PS2. Even if it doesn not work, i think a used PS2 would be cheap to get. Plus all homebrew appz and games are developed using PS2DEV libs, that are meant to work on retail ps2's only.
I believe you can update the drivers on the newer model (DTL-H3010X onwards) TESTs because they can play utility discs without any trouble, and those are what all the updates come on. There may be some DTL-H3000X that will run the utility discs and hence work with the updates. The other option is to install the updates onto a memory card using a retail PS2 then just use that memory card in your TEST (this will not work with the DVD drivers). To answer the original question, there really isn't that great a benefit doing the updates unless you’re updating to BB Nav or Brower 2.0, even then there is no point in doing them unless you have the official HDD. But please don't mod a TEST, its just like modding a Debug Xbox if you are going to mod anything it may as well be a retail console.
I have a dtl-h3012, the original bbnav 0.32 and the beta hdd utility disc (a patched backup) that come with ffxi are both working, i have the official hdd from the linux kit. And of course i won't mod my TEST, this would be stupid.... Is there really a way to patch the PS1Driver? And for what version, the one from the pstwo?
I think it's great to have the browser 2.0 on my normal PS2, installed on a Samsung 80GB HD. I can backup all my PS1 and PS2 saves, have the cache installed for RE: Outbreak, RE: Outbreak File#2, ESPN NBA2K5 and Socom 2 (including the 3 HDD Maps). Plus i can check all the games i have installed through HD Loader. The BB Navigatior would be better, but the browser 2.0 is ok.
I assume you have a mod chip that allows you to run a third party HDD, to my knowledge there is no other way to run a third party HDD. It would be really good though if we could some how dump the firmware of an official HDD and put it onto the equivalent model retail hard drive.
So You managed to have the hdloader games (and beaing able to launch them) and 2.0 browser at the same time? How did You do that? I'm trying atm to find this out. Also can You tell how exacly the browser update is done, I mean the update is stored on memory card or at the hard disk? I know how to patch ATAD.IRX (to make the game work with non Sony hdd) but I dont see it in HDD Utility Disc. You mean one that comes with FFXI, right?
Well, i first i enable AUTO ATAD Patching on the modchip. Then i installed the browser 2.0. Put the HDD Utility Disc 1.10 on the PS2 and it formatted the HDD and installed the browser 2.0. Everything working great. Then with a CD with uLaunchELF, i copied the latest uLaunchELF to the __boot directory. After i copied, i renamed it to BOOT.ELF. After i did this, i reset the PS2, and hold L1. It boots with DEV.2 MODE (running the BOOT.ELF instead of the normal PS2 boot). It loads ulauchELF. After this i created a directory in __boot, called HDLOADER (ex: ___boot/HDLOADER/) and put the HDLOADER.ELF there. Did the same thing with SMS (media Player), PGen (Genesis emulator) .... After created all directories and copies all ELF files, i go to the main menu of uLaunchELF, and have assigned every application to a button. So the next time i use the PS2, i only need to turn it On, boot with DEV.2 (holding L1), then press the button i assigned for each app (no need to memorized it, since it shows on the screen with apps are assigned to each button). Any doubts, check PS2-SCENE.org. I learned everything there.
I know this all coz i'm already using exploit with ulaunchelf, now i only need to find way of patching HDD Utility disc. So it looks like HDloader uses the same filesystem that drowser 2.0, didnt know that. Can You look in launchelf and tell what partitions Hdd utility disc made there? And what files are there, the best would be if Yu could upload them somewhere, then i could put them on my disk and have browser 2.0 installed, otherwise it looks i will have to manage to patch somehow this update disk but dont know how yet :/
The problem is not really installing the HDD Utility Disc 1.10. The problem is the check for the ATAD.IRX file. The official HDD had a different ATAD.IRX, so when you put a normal IDE HDD, it won't be recognized. There's only two ways to do this: The easiest is to get a modchip with ATAD Auto patching feature, so you can by-pass that check, since the modchip has the extracted ATAD.IRX from the official HDD. The other way is to try to upgrade the firmware of a normal IDE HDD with the official one. This one won't be easy and could probably "kill" that HDD. When you format and install the browser 2.0, he creates the following directories/partitions: _net [128MB] = required for network access ??? _system [256MB] = ??? _sysconf [512MB] = system configuration ??? _common [1024MB] = common (save files on the HDD) _boot [512MB] = required to boot ELF files (ulaunchELF (as BOOT.ELF) , HD Loader, PGen,... i put all of them here) _main [0MB] = ??? HD Loader creates these: _mbr [128MB] = Master Boot Record, required by HDL HDLoader Settings [128MB] = required by HDL. Saves the configuration of each game (which modes it need to be set to play)
