ADDENDUM: it maybe worth getting a later version of FMCB as this version (1.8b) is quite old, and reliable!
if you do get a later version, replace the FMCB package that's used with this tutorial with the newer one you have.
the rest of this tutorial is 100% relevant and is NOT to be deviated from!
    (shared at four other places)

Tutorial for FreeMcBoot v1.8b mc maker for ps2 chunky using RETAIL disk HDadvance style!!!!!!

Even though I had the FULL-SPREAD of ps2 hardware (chunky) the optics lens was it's weakpoint and mine was about to brainfart on me... then this came along and sat down beside her!

It's a FreeMcBoot v1.8b memory card maker, HDadvance style (retail disk... http://www.hdadvance.com VOID LINK) My innards fell out!!! :cocksure:

    Requirements: (ALL WORKING)

chunky ps2, ide hdd network lan card for ps2, COMPATIBLE ide harddisk, memory card, (official 8m mc for best results) usb card (4g or less formatted in fat32) and a RETAIL copy of HDadvance!
    Synthesise them all together...

1, Start up on ps2 with the HDadvance disk, as it's loading intercept (slam buttons) the inbuilt hdl ftp server, you should get a black screen with your ps2 ip digits.

2, GET THIS DOWNLOAD (15.4m .7z at mediaSLUT, archive expands to 273m) then unpack and copy to the root of a usb card the "Free McBoot v1.8b Noobie_Package" directory...

3, On winxp side run "hdl_dumb.exe" found in the "extra\hdl_dumb 0.8.3 (winxp side)" directory and establish a connection to the ps2, if it connects hdl dumb will display remaining ps2 hdd capacity.
Then ftp "uLaunchELF v4.08 (ELFs) PS2CD - Globalwar Edition (1-4-07).iso" (you may have to shorten filename for hdl dumb's sake) if the file properly sent, hdl dumb will notify you. do a full ps2 reset.

4, Start the ps2 with HDadvance disk and wait for the hdloader game select screen, then select "uLaunchELF v4.08 (ELFs) PS2CD - Globalwar Edition (1-4-07)" (the hdloader entry may look different) and it will boot into the ulaunchelf frontend, PARTY TIME!!!

5, Insert usb card into upper usb socket on front of ps2 then on ulaunchelf, select file browser and look for "mass0:\" go in to it and run "FREE_MCBOOT.ELF" found in "Free McBoot v1.8b Noobie_Package" directory and BANG!!! fart out fmcb bootable mc's till your arse falls out, i did!! hope this helps the scene??? When a ps2's lens goes tits-up, all that's left is..... oh who am I kidding, FMCB with ps2 hdd's ROCK!!!

Oh yeah, once you have made a working fmcb bootable mc, you can use it's inbuilt ulaunchelf to run the freemcboot noobie package as many times as you need. also if you copy the freemcboot noobie package to the remaining space of an fmcb'd mc, you've just made a CLONE-capable fmcb mc maker mc (no typo) never need to use optics disks again, if you choose. (I can't, my lens is stoned)

If you bootup with the retail HDadvance disk and any usb cards are plugged in, you will get f*cked-off to the inbuilt usbextreme loader!!!
(don't plug in the usb card til you're at the uLE frontend)

I can confirm this package working because it was the only available method to me at the time that didn't require ANY disassembly whatsoever...all official (other than the package itself) I was using HDadvance for two years before I stumbled into this... did I mention my lens was dying? glad I caught it when I did.
Also in the extra directory I included (later than the inbuilt fmcb versions) "SMS Version 2.9 (Rev.4)" and "uLE v4.42a" with a mega bonus of "OpenPS2Loader_0.8" (not required for the use of this upload) just thought it would be nice to make the fmcb experience a bit better... anyway enjoy!!!!

You don't really need any Memory card or HD advance disc. All you need is attach (PS2) IDE hardrrive onto the computer and go to PSX SCENE site and download the software and install it on the (PS2) IDE hardrrive and bam you done! Save time and money.

    Latest update is 1.9V

    ^^ aye...
if you have MORE items than mentioned in the guide!
also, what you refer to is 'FHDB/OSDSYS' (hddboot) which is F*CKALL to do with this guide! (or FMCB in general)
    ..
so, thanks a LOT for that....:(
    ...
    [edit]
and not everybody has ide enclosure or compatible computers! (hdd's on the other hand just appear out of the woodwork, usually small capacity ones)

You can also get one of these to put in the network adaptor so you can use SATA drives:
    http://www.maxdiypower.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=103

This one fits perfectly, but there are others (that are cheaper) that people managed to fit in there with some case modifications. I am using the one linked above with a 320gb WD sata laptop drive.

    old?
    NEVER in dispute!
    ...
the item you mentioned require a ide compatible usb enclosure, computer type is optional. (don't have to put hdd in computer tower)
then using 'winhiip' on xp to send the hddboot file to hdd!
^^ it all rests on user having a ide usb enclosure!
    ...
at that point, if they DO get hddboot on hdd, they can just go into uLE and run FMCB from there!
    ....
bear in mind, hddboot DOESN'T have FMCB packaged with it, that's a separate item!
    ....
the reason this guide existed in the first place was because i saw another thread listing hardwares but missing particulars, they didn't have the skills to take console housing apart, and hddboot wasn't readily available then! (sharing discovery)
    ....
old or not, if folks have the gear that's listed, they're gold!
    ....
if they have an ide usb enclusure, they can send hddboot to hdd and use that to load FMCB through uLE! (1, hddboot dump. 2, FMCB v x.x)

    thanks!
i would rate the contribution but there's little room on the site UI to do that WITHOUT a bias...it seems?!
all i can do is rate the thread itself, and that's just not on as my own thread!
    ...
    so...
    +10 SP's if that counts? :)
    ...
    [edit]
    typo...
