Or i misunderstood something? http://psx-scene.com/forums/content/guide-convert-any-ps2-iso-ps2-classic-captaincps-x-3130/ has anyone tried this so far?
I've tried it, so have plenty of other people, it's legitimate. Works on any PS3 with CFW 4.XX, regardless of whether it was advertised to have PS2 b/c or not. Compatibility isn't perfect, but it's pretty great. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0As9ZdsrJoSp1dC1NTTRCSE5vbTlkOGItTC1CVzE5U3c#gid=7 Some of the games tested so far. Also you can currently only have one 'active' game at a time, but the guy who wrote that guide is working on an app to easily switch out ISOs.
It is easy to switch ISO's from mM. I just make a folder with the encrypted images and tranfers to and from using mMOS. It works good for some games others it is simply terrible. It is alot like the 360's EMU leak that allows all games to run but with hit or miss results. There is talk the new 4.40 OFW has an updated PS2 emu for increased compatibility as it doesn't have new keys and I have already made a 4.40 CFW last night using MFW Builder and after doing so two of the 12 games that didn't work before did after making my CFW.
I wouldn't toss out my PS2 just yet, using the new POPS on PS2 with a chip is far better then a CFW PS3 performance wise but it is a good step forward and some great titles do run 100% like FFX. A chipped PS2 w/ HDD and using POPS with component is still king. If they get OPL working I can then live with the PS1 issues. I have it working with Cobra USB and loads games fine from USB and LAN but is must be a backwards compatible system and the CFW itself is utter trash. It's only upside is the PSP emulator being unlocked as again some great games like Metal Gear, FF VII Crisis Core, and Dracula X work great and look amazing on a big screen. It is just horrible when it comes to running PS3 games and apps properly. You can tell they just did it to shut folks up till the Cobra ODE was released. PS1 compatibility is greater on it over using Sony's official EMU and also allows streaming. So if PS3 stuff isn't your thing then it isn't bad for PS1 with SMB support, shoddy for PSP emulaition but the ones that do work are AWESOME, have a hardware based BC PS3 you can enjoy PS2 again with SMB support, and broken PSN/SEN support Cobra is the dongle for you.
You'll have to make sure the ps3 is on 3.55 firmware as that's the only exploitable one right now. Anything above that you can't install cfw. I updated mine long ago. Hopefully someone unlocks the more current firmwares so we all can enjoy ps2 emulation.
I've not tried this, as I use my (fat) PS2 with a hard drive and load all of the games from that, using Free McBoot to boot from the memory card, and Open PS2 Loader to load games from the hard drive, and I'd *really* recommend this to any PS2 fan. Just google "Free McBoot" and "Open PS2 Loader" for details of where to download them and how to use them.
I'll wait till it gets fully integrated into Rebug+MM , might be useful as a new capture source, my capture card doesnt allways like a PS2 with Component as its 480i ,and not all games work with the video switcher. @Ape you can also HW downgrade most Ps3 consoles there is a min-version check app availible online and you will need either a Progskeet/E3 Flasher or a Nand/Nor Programer to do so.
Does it not piss anyone else off the fact the machine was always capable of software BC but sony decided never to release and monetize it?
This was no introduced until FW 4.20 so it hasnt been around that long and it is far from perfect. Has all the flaws the 360 software emulator has and more. But it is nice for the ones that work.
It wasn't good anyway really. Clearly it was just too difficult for SONY to continue with it weirdly enough, broken promises in this generation.
It does, but it's not news anymore that Sony was full of shit about BC, and they're not giving it to us so they can sell us games we already own so we can pay for the privilege of playing them.
There must be some trace of backward compatibility of PS2 games in the firmware or Operating system of the PS3. Because you can use the PS2 Singstar games from the PS3 game unless there is an emulator or something on the disk.
I would try this, but I don't want to mess with my PS3 because I use it regularly for Blu-rays and Netflix. I don't want to do anything to it that would impede those things. Plus, I already have a PS2 with a good RGB lead, so I don't really need this. I do really like the HD ports/remakes of PS2 games, like the Ico and Shadow of Colossus Collection. I always thought it would be great if they released a PS3 version of Shadow of Colossus that eliminates the slowdown of the PS2 version, and that's exactly what they did.
