Thank you guys for the replies. I will be waiting for my new lens to come in and try it and if that doesn't solve the problem, I will go ahead and try all of the suggestions.

Also, What modchip should I install in the V4 board? Modbo 4? Mars 816GM? Any suggestions? I want to reinstall the original modchip it came with but I have no clue what the wiring is. It's a "Magic 4" modchip and I can't find any diagrams. Anyone want to help me find them?

    Hello adrianr2z,

Sorry about this reply being a bit late in the thread. Anyways for your v4 motherboard the Modbo 4.0 is listed to work with that model but I have a v9 GH-023 board, so cant test that but someone else might know. The Magic 4 Modchip for the version 4 motherboard can be found at here http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=diagrams/ps2/magicv.html and for the modbo 4.0 diagrams http://sksapps.com/index.php?page=diagrams/ps2/modbo.html also that site has the files that can be used for softmods such as ULE (ULaunchElf similar to windows explorer but for the PS2, allowing for navigation of usb flash drives, hard drives, etc.)

Also the original IC chip that was mentioned for your v4 board is a BA5815FM same as in the v7 GH-019-022 I had one of those and the laser died trying too hard to read a backup copy with a modchip installed so I transplanted the chip to a v9. Anyways the link for the list of parts is http://store.richspsxparts.com/version4.html

    Hope this is helpful,
    HaloSlayer255

BA5815FM chips are compatible V9 systems?
    IIRC the v9 used a LA6508,so I thought it's incompatible with the older BA5815FM.

Thanks for the very informative response. The link you sent me for the magic 4 is actually the magic 5. Are they the same installation. If you guys need , I can take a picture of the chip so you all know what I'm talking about. Otherwise, I'm still waiting for the laser to come and to see if the problem was ultimately my laser. Thanks!

That is correct, I was mentioning how I transplanted the modchip (Modbo 4.0) into the v9 console. Sorry for any potential confusion caused to anyone with this message.

I had assumed that the chips are the same install process, will check to see if I can find the 4 revision, sorry about that.

*Update* Looks like the points match up on the chip, you do have the no bios gap revision correct? All that should matter then is the 5v power location instead of 3.3v as per the diagram. A usb port would easily provide that, as that is its spec. If you want to use that, I would get a usb device and with the connector facing away from you going left to right is the pinout: Power (5v), data +(read), data - (write), and the farthest pin on the right is ground. So on the PS2 motherboard with the connectors facing away from you going left to right: ground, data - (write), data + (read), and Power (5v). On the PS2 motherboard there are two more locations for ground on the sides of the connector and to act as strain relief. So it goes: Ground, Ground, Data -, Data +, Power 5v, Ground.

Hey thanks for the reply! However I'm having some problems regarding point S. So I went about looking at the diagram for Magic 3.1 no gap diagram and I looked at the V5 no gap diagram and Point S I can't tell how to install. So in one of the diagram (V3.1) , it shows the resistors bridged together and V5 shows point S not bridged and installed to the top resistor. Now I bridged the resistors together and connected the wire though when I connected the ps2 into the power, it would get no power. I removed the bridge and installed to the top resistor and it got power and booted up. The chip looks more like the V3.1 so I dont know what to do. Other than that, all the other points were fine.

Please someone explain Point S! I dont get how to install it! Do I bridge and connect to the bridge or what?!?!?

    This is the diagram:
    http://sksapps.com/diagrams/ps2/Magic3.1/MAGIC_III_V4_NOGAP.jpg

If you look at point S , the two things are bridged and when I did that my ps2 receives no power and has no red light on the reset switch

Looking at that diagram and from what I can piece together from my v7 and v9 console revisions, those parts are connected by a very small copper trace between the components. I would remove the solder bridge and then pick where you want it to be soldered to. That location allows for the bootup of PS1 backups as well. What is your motherboard revision? IIRC it is GH-XXX where XXX is a number such as GH-023 is a v9 console GH-026 is a v10 etc. This might help from my v9 install: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4qdw4s4xl1w8iny/ofaFhl4GCM under PS2 v9 Success, 102_3592.JPG it should help you with that S location on the board, near the part J106 on that picture.

    Hope this helps,

Hey! Thanks for the reply!! I hope i dont come off as rude though the pictures you posted didnt help to explain much :( however, my console is GH-013. So to conclude, should i remove bridge and connect to only one of the resistors? Or bridge them(even though i get no power)?

    Thanks again

It's okay, I didn't think that. Anyways I posted that pic because it seems all PS2 revisions have a location that has a capacitor and a resistor closely connected that leads to the PS1 SCEA/E/J signal location on the motherboard. I would remove that solder bridge and solder to either component. Those are so close together that I would also check for any potential solder splashes, or if using lead-free solder tin whiskers, one of the many reasons I use 60/40 leaded :D When I did my modchip install I soldered to the capacitor cause it was easier for me, however either component should work.

    Hope this helps,
    HaloSlayer255

P.S. If you decide to test anti-mod PS1 games Spyro 3 Year of the Dragon was the most anti-mod protected game from its time so that will be a sure way to test if it works (might only be on v9 and up though).

That install should work, I'd check your bios wires to be safe and make sure that the W location (near the resistor, near the BIOS chip) is not connected more than once, looks like there might be a bit too much solder on some of the places but that might just be the pictures making the solder look more pronounced. Looks good and should work if not, might have a dry connection somewhere.

    Goodluck and nice job,

I think i'm actually going to snap this ps2 in half! I'm truly outraged!
So here is the story ... I received the new laser today!! I unsoldered the anti static point and installed in the system. To my suprise, it still didn't work (Didn't read both Games and CD-R...Gave disc read error) ... So I decided to turn it off and clean the lens just to make sure. Right after cleaning the lens and hitting the power switch in the back of the console to turn it on, the console received no power :/ ? I thought the power cord was maybe loose but nothing seemed to work. The reset switch didn't turn red and now console is getting no power at all. I am truly stumped and unsure of what the hell happened. Literally cleaned the lens right after having it turned on and right after doing that, the reset button didn't turn red and now it gets no power at all. WHAT THE HELL! Feel so RAGED! I feel like smashing this console with a sledgehammer! DAMN!

Now this sounds like an issue with the CD/DVD driver IC Chip on the motherboard. I would check all of the fuses on your board and also see if that driver is okay. If it is not you will need to replace the fuse and the IC Chip. I would check at this link: http://store.richspsxparts.com/version4.html and see if you can also find a better price on the part, to be safe I would say try to find the fuse near the cd/dvd IC chip and replace that (if its bad) and maybe the spindle IC chip. However I don't know what that part is on the v4 board. Hopefully someone else can help, Jinn is very knowledgeable with PS2 hardware and so is Oliver_ira.

    Good luck,

Ok so good news... I first replaced the CD/DVD driver IC chip to the original one (as suggested earlier in the post by a member) and tried turning it on. It got power but showed a blank screen and i did a continuity check on all the fuses and the one near the dvd/cd ic chip failed so i removed it and bridged it together with a wire (temporary fix). SO I got the ps2 to boot and show up on the screen however it still cant read dvd's or cd's. What now? Anymore suggestions? you have helped me a lot and have done a lot but we are back at square one where it isn't reading the dvd games or cd's :/

I'd like to note on my old laser it was just not able to read dvds however it read games fine. This new laser , it can't read either.

Does anyone know what else could be wrong? I mean I bought a new laser.... I'm truly not sure anymore. What else could I check for ?

Since that fuse is bad, it probably took the CD/DVD IC Driver chip with it. On the BA5815FM chip check pin 8 and see if it contacts ground if it does its dead. Pin 8 is on the left side of the chip with the ps2 motherboard's network adapter facing away from you. So on the left side of that chip it has 7 pins a bigger ground/heatsink pin and another 7. On the second set next to the ground pin is the pin that you want.

I would also check both lasers and measure the tracking and focus coil resistances. A working laser has about 4.5-5 and should still work. If it is lower, or very low resistance that laser is shot. This link should have the locations used to measure both coils on your unit http://wtkasa.com/psx/database.php

    Good luck,

The ps2 is honestly haunted lol. I checked those stuff and they turned out good however I was just playing around with the ps2 and man is it acting up really weird. It like didn't display anything and then a few more power cycles it displayed on the tv again then the laser went crazy and just made a humming noise and it's scaring me! It like hisses and seems to be haunted by some demon. Maybe I should buy a fuse and replace the wire I placed and buy a new dvd/cd ic. I also adjusted the pots of the laser according to the guide you sent (cd = 800-900 ohms , dvd = 1200-1400 ohms). Suddenly laser decided it would read the cd-r disc and then it stopped reading it and its just acting up and being really weird! Like I can't really explain it.

Currently it boots up but I don't know what to do. The BA5815FM didn't seem dead but the laser is acting REALLY weird and strange! I'm just getting fed up with the ps2 as it's being a total waste of time :/ Should I buy a fuse to replace the one that had exploded (near dvd/ic chip) and a new BA5815FM chip? I don't want to spend much more before throwing it out and deciding to scrap the motherboard.

The rail on the side is randomly keeps spinning even when the laser is not in it :/

I would definately start by replacing the fuse, if it blows again then the BA5815FM IC is dead and/or the laser assembly too. Did you measure the coils? From the readings of CD and DVD ohms those sound like the pots for the laser to adjust the power given to the diode. The coils should measure about 4.5-5 ohms. on the lowest setting of your multimeter. If you look at the laser assembly on its right side you should see 4 solder points. The two on the left going up and down are for one coil, and the two on the right going up and down are for the second coil (I forget which is which though) and if the focus coil is very low that means the laser is shot.

You mentioned you have a second assembly for the laser (the original, bad laser) I would also check its coils in the above manner and if possible you may be able to swap them over, I tried it once but I dont think it went too well. Also that humming IIRC is the laser trying to focus and using more power to read the disk, if it gets too much power it blows the fuse, cd/dvd ic driver chip and potentially the laser.

The rail on the side is for the laser guide arm to move, that is normal since the ps2 is trying to access a disc, it just trys to home on startup or after the tray is put back in.

    Good luck on this,
    HaloSlayer255
