I have a playstation 2 tool - t10k - practically brand new - it only ever had a power test in 2005 apparently I had it running for quite some time earlier today. I power it off and leave it for about 25 minutes. When i went to power it back on. I hear a clicking, quite loud. The HDD light stays on and it doesn't post. Any ideas as to what is happening and what I should do?
Where is the sound coming from? I would guess the hard-drive? However that would not cause the no post. You will have to open it up and try to refit everything, start with pc card/memory.
If your HDD burnt it probably hangs the POST. Try to disconect both HDD (if there are 2 of them) POST should appear. First of make it's full backup and only after that do anything else with HDD's. You can use any other PATA IDE drive to replace origins.
update, I simply knocked the bottom of the box, The metallic part where the stand would usually be, with some force but not rough. It posts just fine now but I have strange network behaviour. i can connect to 192.168.1.215 (My Tools IP) I see the webconsole. But when I enter into English index I get a connection refused error in my browser. When I use ProDG I get a socket error and when I use codewarrior I get a failed connection. If I disable my network adaptor and turn it back on I can execute 1 file in the codewarrior to the tool. Then i can't use it until I disable and re-enable my network adaptor.
I think the HDD was dying. You should try to clone it onto another disk. If logging in did help, perhaps it caused some file(s) that resided over bad sectors to be rewritten. But it doesn't solve the problem of the HDD dying, if it is dying.
Given the lack of POST and (if) the clicking sound came from the HDD, I wonder if this could also be due to the power supply failing. It can cause the HDD to spin-up and then if the power supply fails and powers-down, the HDD could make such a sound.
I believe it was the powersupply. It may have been because I was running my CRT TV on the same, low power extension cable as the tool. I just changed to a powerbar instead of the splitter. Then I unplugged the system and used the power button to drain any power remaining on the boards. It does make an improvement to the noise level in general. When the tool used to start the HDD read sounds were very audable. I don't hear it now. I also have a DELL Dimension 3000. I had a look in the bios and there are options to make IDE HDDs quiet.
