Ok, so my PS2 drive is making this horrible grinding noise ever time it opens and closes. So I've cracked it open to take a look around. I've removed the top cover of the DVD drive, but I can't seem to pull tray loose to see what's causing that noise. The only thing I can think of is to turn the unit on, and press the eject button on to see what's up. Any thoughts? would it be alright for me to turn the unit on when it's opened up like that?

    Thanks

    UPDATE

I poked around a little more on the PS2, and discovered the problem. Thanks anyway!

Yes you can do that if you want to. But its easier to just remove the tray once you have it open. There are 2 TINY black screws at the front left side of the tray (left if you are looking at it from the units front)

They are kinda hard to spot and they hold down a black plastic tab piece that holds the tray on tracks. I have worked on at least 20 PS2's and about 4 or 5 of them had the problem with the tray being loud. A couple even had trays so screwed up they would pull themselves back in after about 1 second of being ejected, so you had to throw the game in real quick lol.

I usually just do laser work on them, but if it was mine I would put some lithium greese on the tracks and see if that helps. Might also be the motor although I have never seen one that actually failed due to this. Anyway good luck and let me know if theres any info I can give you on it.

EDIT: crap just saw your second post, anyway can you please tell me how you fixed it for future refrence. Please dont close just yet. Thanks!

I noticed the tray wasn't aligned correctly, so I removed it (found those two tiny black screws... they really are easy to miss!) and carefully put it back on. Seems to have fixed the problem for now. If it starts acting up again, then I may try putting lithium grease on the tracks, like you suggested.

I'm not sure how the tray got messed up like that. It probably happened when it was stolen a little while back. I'm pretty sure the people who stole it weren't all that careful with it :p

The drawer does sometimes come off its runners.... usually if the console has a bit of a knock.
