I have a external hard drive I bought from and e-waste reseller on its way to me. It looks like it came from infrogames. Since I do not have a PsTool to hook it up to, is there any safe way to see if any files are left on it? Can I just put it in my fat PS2?

Yes, you can remove it from the Sony enclosure, it's only a few screws and a a couple of connecters, and the HDD will fit right into your fat ps2 with an ethernet/HDD adapter. You may need a jumper on it though to set it as "master" as the official Sony enclosure has a jumper switch on the outer case, and the ethernet adapter for a fat ps2 does not. Then run uLaunch on the ps2, and explore the HDD. Files can be copied out to a USB stick etc. Let us know if there's anything interesting on there..
