A lot of games let's you to switch of flicker filtering Examples: tekken4,5, final fantasy 12, sega 2500 ages titles mostly those developed by M2 I know that to achive flicker filtering they are using the 2 read circuit(at least that's what i figured out from docs and forums) (they are using 2 images slightly shifted to obtain the blurry effect the poor man's antialiasing) My question is, what are the chances to find a hex string(to hack) (similar to the 240p hexstring, or the dvd checks etc) or a method to turn off flicker filtering in games which don't give you the option to turn it off I like the sharp razor edge image quality of games that are nor using flicker filtering On the original Xbox there is this flickerfuc.er program that let's you to do this(setting the the flicker filter level to 0) Maybe a good start it would be to compare memory dumps of games like tekken4 or others that let's you to switch off or on flicker filtering You go to display option make a dump then make another dump after you turn off flicker filtering and look what has changed between the 2 dumps Anone wiiling to help
There's a reason for the flicker to happen. On early consoles (Famicon, Super Famicon) it was used to mask or diminish the effect of chroma leaking on the luminance signal while using composite video (dot crawl). The Playstation and Playstation 2 use that along with a few other tricks to make the composite and S-Video image better on CRT sets. Of course it's an annoyance when you use them with an modern LCD or with a RGB CRT set ... Now, as per turning the stuff off, it's going to be difficult, but on the PS2 you can try a homebrewn called GS Mode Selector. It will FORCE the mode you set regardless what the game tries to set it as. As it being an TSR, you have the advantage of being able to use your original discs (no need to modify the games at all). ;-)
i know about gs mode selector that program does not have that option people mainly use it for forcing 480p or higher resolution i looked at the souce code and they have nothing related to the 2 read circuits or flikcer filtering i give up, my english it's not good enough to explain what i want thx for the reply it's always the same on every forum i post
I kind of know what you mean but like I said, it's FORCED because developers back then expected people to use the game on CRT TVs.. If you force PROGRESSIVE mode, you won't have flickering as the flickering problem is caused by how the console exploits the interlacing of video to smoothen the image and get rid of the dot crawl...
i think we are reffering to different things i want flickering, i want the super sharp image i understand what you are saying, but you see early ps2 games(older consoles didn't used it, it started with the Dreamcast) didn't use flicker filtering that's why they have this super sharp image then people started to complain about the flickering(jag fest etc) and some "smart" devs figured out this poorman antialising called flicker filtering flicker filtering is used just to reduce the flickering because 480i, but it's destroying the image quality you are saying CRT but that is the problem that the games looks to washed out and blurry on CRT On the 3dbeyond froums back in the PS2 days a dev commented that the whole flicker filter can be turned off setting just some registers on the GS and because games like tekken4, 5, final fantasy 12, sega ages galaxy force, the treasure box and many other games let's you turn off flicker filtering, thus giving you a more flickering image but much more vibrant and sharp and everything is changed instantly, it's not like the image is turning black or something(like when you change from 480i to 480p) anyway it's no point to continue, maybe in the future what is curious to me is that why on the xbox there is the program a mentioned Flicker Fuc.er, which is exactly the same thing like in Tekken4 and the other games i mentioned, providing you with a way to disable flicker filtering thus giving you a superb sharp image but ofcourse with more pronounced aliasing Simple test play tekken4,5 or any other game that i mention and go to option and play with the option SHARP or SOFT, or flicker ON OFF and you(not necesaily l_oliveira but any other use) will see the difference
I'm gonna bump this because I'm also interested in removing the flicker filter on games that don't have the option, either through an explicit option or as part of a progressive scan setting. The Harmonix Guitar Hero and Rock band games are perfect examples of the latter for experimentation, if you force them to a consistent video mode with GSM then switch progressive scan on, the image will be much sharper than normal. There are several games that I play (such as both Flatout games) that have no way to disable this filter, no explicit option nor 480p setting. I have my PS2 set up with Codebreaker so I'd prefer a cheat code that I can toggle on or off depending on which type of TV I'm using. Does anyone have a starting point for finding the ML code that enables the filter?
