Since i was going off-topic on the W A: Alter Code:F thread, i'm starting this new one.

So, I will buy the Official Ps2 HDD when i'll have enough free cash for it. i'll certainly buy the HDD loader also, but i was wondering if i had to buy a chip or something to make it work. Can you use Burned Cds (or DVDS) with it (without any chips again)? Use Emultors, Surf The web, Install Psone games and all? if not, will it be inclued in the next versions?

    thx,
    cahaz

If your PS2 is unmodded, it will only allow to install originals from your region. Ex. only original NTSC|U/C games if you have a NTSC|U/C system.

With modchips, you can install imports, and backups.

Emulators only run on modded systems or using MC exploits. Plus emulators run better on newer modchips because their support of DEV.1 (running the emulator through the MC) or DEV. 2 (running through the HDD).

Surf the web? No way. There's some beta browsers, but they simply are not worth the trouble. Want to surf the web? Do it on a computer.

PS1 games can't be installed. HD Loader / HD Advance only support PS2 games (and this does not mean all PS2 games work on HD Loader / HD Advance ). There a project of a new HD application that will try to implement it, but it's just a planned feature.

For HD Loader / HD Advance compatibility list go here: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/casey.miller/HD Loader Compatibility.htm

There's other compatibility lists on the net. These lists are provided by the users, that test the games. If a game is not on the list, it's not tested yet, so it can work or not.

PS: By the way cahaz, do you have acess to the official HDD? I'm looking for the HDD Utility Disc 1.10 (even posted on the marketplace forum). Can you help me getting one.

i don't own any PS2 HDD for the moment, but i certainly will in a near future.
Why the Utility Disc 1.10 anyway? is it just the last version, an uncomon one that had an ''hole'' that could be used to by-pass something, an obscure option that was removed or something else? And how do i know wich HDD utility disc come with my HDD? And how do you define an ''acces to the ofical HDD?''? you mean that i can buy it in a shop near me, or that i'm working at a shop and could check something for you?

Hehe, that's alot of question here, sir! ;)
If i can help you, i will.

you know you dont have to buy the official PS2 HDD right? You can get any standard HDD as long as it fits on the network adapter. I have a 120 gig Maxtor...works fine. You just have to use a HDD that's at least 40 gig for the ps2 to recognize it.

You also have to do some extra work to put dual layered games on the HDD, I havent done any yet, but you have to do it with the HDD hooked up to a computer.

Get your self this modchip: http://www.divineo.fr/cgi-bin/div-fr/ezipro "is french!!!" mmm no need to solder anything, it comes with clips just like some of the xbox chips, get yourself a 120gigs HD, then flash your chip with toxic bios and be happy :)

I only got it to use HD Advance. It makes having a Gamefly subscription something to look into.

yeah, i know i can use any other hdd, but it's not the original one made especially for the ps2 with all the documentations and programs, wich is a plus for the collecting purpose. There's also FFXI , to complete my ff collection. This one will be pretty uncomon in the next years, i predict it (...and we all know that when Cahaz is predicting something, you need to listen! j/k :D) (well...the ps2 ntsc-us version, to be more precise, mind you), and we all know how ff hardcore fans are, they'll go for high price on ebay.:p

so i'll go for the oficial, i don't care if i don't have 120 gig on my ps2, i'll be able to install all i need with the 1/3 of it. Hell, my PC Hdd is 80 gig, i don't think i'll need more than this for my ps2 and if i buy another one, it will go for my pc! :)

Wrong. There's no need for the official HDD. You can get HD up to 200GB, and you can use PS2 Linux and install the HDD Utility Disc 1.10 (so it recognizes in the browser).

But they will only work if you use a modchip with AUTO ATAD PATCHING. DMS3, DMS4, Matrix Infinity, Venus Pro,... All the modchips i mentioned have it.

Don't know about the BB Navigator, though it would only work on a Japanese PS2, so i don't care. I heard that FFXI will work as long as you install on the bigger HD before trying to log on the official HD. (Ex: You buy the FFXI pack and a 120GB. Instead of putting the official HDD on the PS2, you put the 120GB, format it with the HDD Utility Disc, then install the FFXI and use all serial keys that come with it.). I don't know if it works, i only heard rumours. But if it does work, it would only work on a PS2 modded with a modchip with AUTO ATAD Patching.

Why i keep mentioning it? Well, the "official" HDD is just a regular Maxtor 40GB HD with a different Firmware. There's a file called ATAD.irx that when you boot the console with a HD installed it looks for it on the HD to see if it's the official one. With those modchips, when the console looks for it on the HD, the modchip bypasses it and use some kind of patching, making it work like a official one.

I have 2 friends that are using 80GB HD's. One installed PS2 Linux succesfully and the other has the HDD Utility Disc 1.10 installed, meaning the HD shows up on the browser and already installed the cache for games like RE: Outbreak and Socom II.

Anyway, if you want the HD, just for the HD Loader / HD Advance, i think any unmodded system / modded with any modchip will work.

PS: Before buying an HD for the PS2, i suggest to go here: http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/ to see if it works ok.

Remember that i'm in the american continent, and you are in Japan. Like i said, i don't know about the BBNAV. As far as i know, the NTSC|U/C HDD's are just Maxtor and Seagates 40GB's HD's with different firmware (info all over the web)

But the NTSC|U/C version of the HDD Utility Disc 1.10, that install the browser 2.0 works on any HD, if you have a modchip with a ATAD AUTO PATCHING.

I know this because i installed it for my friend. He's now using it to make backups of his PS1 and PS2 saves, and installed the cache of the games. The HDD is shown on the browser, like the official HDD. And it's a regular Samsung 80GB he was using in his computer before he bought a 200GB to replace it.

Don't know about the BBNAV, and in fact i don't care, since it only works on Japanese PS2's.

The info about the HDD Utility Disc 1.10 (Browser 2.0) working on any HD is spread all over the net. Just check PS2 info sites, and modchip sites (telling it's features).

    :smt023

EDITED: Wanna know more about the NTSC|U/C version of the HDD Utility (Browser 2.0) ? Follow these links:

    - HDD Browsing (see how different is the NTSC|U/C browser 2.0)

Like i said, the BBNAV is way different and way more advanced than what we got in the american continent.

Well, i'll have to send him an e-mail asking him to take pics. But i found pics of the browser 2.0 installed on a 20GB HD (Found these pics on a PS2 brazilian message board).

    Enjoy

The HDD shows up, installed on a regular HD.

The only thing on the HDD. The Folder "Saves".

    See the size? 19.456MB -> 20GB.
    Still have doubts?

No problem. Sharing our knowledge is great. [IMG]

About the BBNAV, it would be great to have it on NTSC|U/C territory. You guys in Japan are lucky by having it.

Well, i might give it a try, but the coolest feature about the BBNAV are the game channels and that kind of stuff. The latest versions, since 0.30, have e-mail and some newer stuff right?

I'm confused now - do you have to buy the hard disk separately to the Network Adaptor? It would explain why they're only 30 Euro.

And does any of this stuff on PAL PS2s?

The Network Adaptor is sold separately of the HDD.

From what i know, the HDD is not avaiable in PAL. My suggestion to you, if you have one modchip that has the feature of AUTO ATAD PATCHING, would be to get a compatible normal HD and install both PS2nfo HDDTools (Formats it and let the HD to be seen on the browser) and HD Loader / HD Advance.

IMPORTANT: Before buying a HD for the PS2, check if it fits the expansion bay and if it works, on this list

You sure I'd need a mod chip to do it on a PAL system - even for installing PAL games? I'm readin a compatibility list for HD Loader and it says loads of PAL games work, and it says how you can install games via a PC of any region and they'll work fine too. I don't care about not being able to play games that officially use the HDD - not like they released FFXI for the PS2 hee anyway!

It's a bit misleading the way it's got a "HDD" in big writing down the side of the network adaptor - I assume the disk goes inside that then?
