You need a cracked version of the disc; I remember seeing it around in the net, but can't remember where. You'll probably find it at snesorama or emuparadise... or your preferred torrent finder :)
Still, I don't know if it really works or how well it works...

Have a look at this. He's running the cracked version of the HDD Utility on his console. As far as I'm aware at this point in time, you still need the official Sony drive to allow this. There are members of the dev community (and members of our forums) that are working on non-Sony HDD support, but I have yet to see a release yet. (I hope I get offered a Beta test release);-)

What this means is that you'll be able to run homebrew from the browser menu without having the Hacked OSDSYS on, (which I think is pretty cool).
I'm a few days away myself to being able to do what is seen in the video. I'm using an official drive though. I have a 160gb ready and waiting for non-Sony support though.

Basically the main problem with this is the ATAD driver which checks the authenticity of the harddrive.

Now that it's possible to unpack, decode and analyze PS2 Krypto ELFs and maybe repack and put then together again into something the PS2 will accept as valid, it's viable to:

Unpack, de-stub, un-pack the payload, convert the unpacked payload into an runtime ELF then mod it to remove HDD checks.

From that something such as PS2 packer could be used to repack it.

From that it could be then put to use on the HDD.

The main roadblock here though is the MBR block on the __MBR partition, which is an headerless ELF with an fixed load address. The compressed payload has an entry point that is different than that of the address the bios loads it (it's the address the unpacker stub expects to be run from).

Once all that is sorted, there will be a possibility of using the SCPH-10000 loader files (also patched to skip ATAD check) to start any non SONY harddrive under the 128GB limit. (SONY stuff is LBA24 bit FYI)

what i wonder is, can we use that also to re-enable hdd(hdd-osd) support for early slim models? as these still have hdd conections on the board but the rom(as far as i know) lacks support for it.
