I just purchased FFXI on sale, and I was mainly going to have it for collection purposes only, and I dont have the Network adapter. Do I need it for the HDD to work and reduce load times and stuff on my PS2 games?

The HDD will NOT work without the Network Adapter.

You're kidding right? Yeah, the slim PS2s are out, but it's not like the Network Adapters have disappeared from stores. ;)

they are also bagged at ebgames for like $9, some do or dont come with the disk....but you'll still have to hit up ebay if you are looking to use the HDD with other games and loading....

Last I checked, they were practically everywhere around here. I almost bought one, in fact, but since I don't have broadband it would've been practically useless.

The adaptors are still easy to get a hold of between $20 and $30. You might get lucky and find a used one for $20 with the network disc. Once you get that squared away buy HD Extreme, it will let you back up your legal copies of PS2/PSX games onto the HDD and load the games from there. Of course, some online games will not work because they check for this stuff and if the game is loaing off the hdd and not the disc, then it will not let you play online.

Are you sure about it working with PSX games? To the best of my knowledge, this was not possible with the way the PSX chip works on the PS2.

HD loader / Hd Advanced won't work with PS1 games. When you initiate the chip for ps1, it disables power to the hard drive to save energy. There doesn't seem to be a way to prevent this.

Here's a really dirty way to get a network adapter for free:
Go to gamestop/EB games and look for a PS2 with the adapter on it. Buy it, take the adapter off, and return it to the store. You have 14 days to return it from the time you bought it. Free network adapter. That's how the employees get them.

It's been a year since I worked at a GameStop, but at GameStop that wouldn't work if they do their job. Large PS2s used with a network adapter is a different SKU than a Large PS2 used without a network adapter. Not saying that it won't work... just don't be surprised if it doesn't.

Don't need to buy something that is free. Yes HD Loader is a free homebrew appz. HD Advance, HD Extreme and any other clones are just HD Loader with a different skin.

Get the latest HD Loader, 0.7c, and boot it by DEV1, DEV2, of if you have a unmodded console, use one of the exploits.

The reason you can't use PS1 games in HD Loader is because the PS1 CPU in the PS2, is also used as the IOP (Input / Output Processor). When it's in "PS2 MODE" you can use the HDD, Network Adaptor, USB ports,... If you boot in "PS1 MODE" these can't be used, because it's running as main processor.

The explication is more complex than this, but that's the basic thing you need to know.

I just called Gamestop, and they said it was freakin' $39.99!

I guess I'll trade in some DVDs or something.
