I have PS2 import doubts. What modchip or alternative method is recommended to play PS2 Imports and whatnot? Or is that credit card-like changer safe? What is the option that does less damage to PS2? What do you guys use? Thanks.
Yeh, the fliptop mod is the safest thing out there, only problem is that it voids your warranty. The credit-card thingie causes extra stress on your drive door motors, and with a modchip you can kiss your PS2 goodbye after about a year when the thing kicks the bucket - this is of course that the installation doesn't get bolloxed as well. Your safest bet is a fliptop - mine worked fine for over a year (my PS2 has since died of issues it was having far before the fliptop was installed), plus they can be fairly cheaply found online, and any monkey who knows how to use a screwdriver can install one. Just make sure you either buy it in a bundle with the latest Swap Magic discs, or get them seperately, because it's useless without them.
Sorry to go a little ot, but I have a question, What is the fliptop, and why does it affect the ability to play imports? thanks
Matrix Infinity modchip. Plays everything (NTSC|U/C, PAL, NTSC|J) perfectly, without the need for booting sequences or boot disks. Plus it goes to a "sleep mode" after it recognize the disk. Another good thing, it's upgradeable. So if any problems happen with newer software protection, they release a new bios, that you burn on a CD-R and upgrade the modchip bios automatically withouth the need to open the system. Another great thing. It plays PAL games in colour on NTSC systems (it forces a NTSC mode, although the TV must support this too). I was going to replace my old Messiah2 chip for this one, but i did not had the time to do it yet. Probably till the end of this month.
I have a DMS3. Can't use it though, my PS2's broke. Will put a DMS4 in my SCPH-70000 if it supports it.
I kinda disagree when you say modchips "kill" the PS2 after a year. This fame is because the first and second generation modchips where terrible. Modchips like S-box, Novachip, Neo2.5, and many others that require swap disc methods, forcing the PS2 to read what he didn't wanted. The drive lens kept recognizing the game every 5 seconds, wearing it fast, "killing the ps2". This is very different in actual modchips like the Messiah2 (getting old now), and the latest DMS3 and Matrix Infinity. Both the DMS3 and Matrix Infinity are upgradeable, both have a sleep mode, and both turn themselves off when they recognize the media (something that don't last for more than 5 seconds). Since it recognizes the media before booting, they run with that information, so the lens work normally. Plus these modchips have extra fuctions like DEV mode, Force-NTSC modes and so on. And by the way, my PS2 is a 30001R, with Messiah2. After 2 years it still works great. The PS2 is not well builty, yes, but if you use a bad modchip it will kill it faster. If you use a good one, it will work normally like a non-modded one. Just my 2 cents :-D
I think the HD-loader, especially when run from the memory card, is the safest option as it *hardly* uses your PS2's drive which is the most error-prone component. You can play imports with that if you ISO them and then put them on your PS2's HDD using your PC.
What about Magic V3.1 Modchips? Are these recommendable? Can't find the Matrix Infinity chip in Mexico, unfortunately, and the options are that magic chip and Messiah 5, I think. For my SCPH 35001, the modchip dude recommended Magic 3.1, but I have no idea which chip is better. Could someone help me with recommendations?
Touché... Ah, but what WOULD you, fortunate JPN PS2 owner, use in the incredibly rare situation that you would need or even want to use a US PS2 game in your unit? ... uh, and Don't say a US PS2. He he.
Does the HD loader make it so that I can put in let say a 250gig HDD?? DVD ISOs are huge, a 40gig wont suffice after the stuff I plan to have.
Hmmm... I do have a US PS2, damn! I would probably go with the fliptop deal since my soldering skills suck da' big one.
I hear PS2 modchips are a bitch to install anyway. I was going to go with the fliptop, but I'm waiting to see what will happen with the PSTwo import problem (I'm sure Sony will think of some way to fuck up imports).
Nope not from what I've heard, the PStwo is very easy to swapmod due to the design BTW, is the PStwo out yet in everyone's countries? I was pretty surprised to see it in stores yesterday, didn't expect it'd come that fast!
That's fantastic! Now I just have to wait until someone sells theirs to the local pawn shop. That way Sony doesn't get my money a second time. :smt067 [Sony].
