Lol, Sony released a disc to disable the multiregion dvd player? And that the only purpose of that disc? I hope not . :smt082
- Not exactly. With the V1.0 drivers(on utility disc 1.0) if you held down a combination of buttons you could watch region 1 DVD's(US). It is assumed this feature was there for testing but they forgot to take it out for release. Sony quickly replaced this with the v1.1 utility disc which was packaged with PS2's from April 2000(1 month after intial release).
You don't remember that, DJ? They got a pretty sever toungue-lashing from the DVD Consortium that really thinks region-protection works.
lol, a lot of DVD players (like mine) have a "secret" code to a service menu that allows setting regions... and about the other half is sold region-free :smt043
Yeah, this business of multi-region DVD players is a bit odd. Any of the 'big name' companies like Sony, Panasonic etc all have region coding on their players, and need to be unlocked. But the dodgy Alba DVDs (and other makes you've never heared of) that you can buy for £40 or less are all region free. And some play DivX. Not sure how they get away with that???
The ones that play divx license the divx4/5 codec, and some of them have a blagged backwards compatibility with the (illegal) Divx3 codec. The xvid codec is open source. To my knowledge, most of the hardware divx players don't work too well, although I've never seen one. Remember that codecs aren't illegal, but the content created with them may be. Just like the MP3 codec isn't illegal, but most MP3 files are.
here in OZ pretty much all DVD player are multi-zone out of box and if not the manufacturer put a slip inside how to turn it on... actually it's hard to buy non multi-zone DVD player nowadays... cheers
not in OZ mate. My Philips DVDR-75 as well as SONY DVD player I got for free were all multi-zone out of box even though the label on the carton said otherwise...
My old Pioneer DV-535 is multi-region out of the box. I have friends that in some cases buy imported DVDs. Why? Because some movies like Spiderman and Kill Bill: Vol1 were released only on Fullscreen. WTF?! Of course they will buy imports :smt067
Thats the retailers rather than the manufactureres. They open the crates, do the region mod's, then package them back up.
My Samsung DVD player that I bought 3 years ago is NTSC multi region if you use a AIWA remote :smt043 If I hold down clock & set together on the AIWA remote and point it at the Samsung DVD player. the word "Adjust" appears on the read out. This allows me to play any disc that's in NTSC but not PAL. It just says that the PAL disc is not a DVD. Yakumo
My Zensonic 330 works great :smt023 . That would be becuase our Fair Trade Commision deemed it anti-competetive to region lock DVD players. Or something along those lines. Same thing with modchips but that seems to have gone back and forth over the years.
You should also be careful though. Some DVD players will allow you to change region 5 or 6 times but then perminently lock it. It was meant for people like GaijinPunch who move from one region to another.
Yes I remember my very first DVD player for PC was like that when they first came out. It came multi region/unspecified and said in the software you could only change it 6 times till it locked out. So I just left it multi ...why anyone would set it is beyond me ?
DC Divx is the bomb. So as long as you burn the CDs slowly. I've thought about getting a set top box divx player. The thing is, if you burn a CD with divx files over 2x it won't play right on the DC Divx.
