After trying the basic method of adjusting the height of the laser and turning the torx resistor I still can't get the laser to read DVDs. It can read CDs, just not DVDs. So I guess I'll have to buy a brand new unit from richs psx parts. However, they dont seem to carry the type I need.

I have a SCPH 50001 model and laser unit says HD7 on it. According to RichsPSXParts.com my model supports the KHS-400C.

Can I just replace the HD7 unit with a new 400C type? I rather buy from this site than from ebay.

Wait, did you try lubing the gears/rails on the laser assembly? According to the sci.electronics.repair people that works quite well.

Tried everything. It can read a badly scratched PSX just fine, but not a brand new DVD game.

I just want to know if a 400c laser will work on a system that has the hd7 laser.

    yes but

    for sure it will work!!

but before you need to run PS2 Lens Changer to enable 400-c compatibility, which will disable HD7 compatibility

you need a chip or a swap magic to load it

or maybee the technic with the ps1 game... can't remember its name
