Okay, My Fat PS2 SCPH-39001 is having problems. Everytime i turn it on, It makes a grinding noise when i turn it on. The laser is a 400c, Not the shitty HD7 and i played GTA 3, LCS and San Andreas nonstop without any disc read errors on it. What caused it to make the noise now? I tried to rebend the DVD arm on the laser and either still made the noise or caused the laser to stop moving. And i need a new PS2 if the repair fails. And what's the best fat model PS2 for general playing:

    SCPH-30001 R
    or SCPH-39001
    with the KHS-400c laser.

If it works, then why fix it?

No it doesn't work. It still grinds. It no longer reads anything.

Also when i put a disc in it, It will make the grinding noise non stop even when the disc is ejected and it will stop if i reset or turn off the unit but then will do it again when i turn it on.

You know, any optical block model would work well if new. There are differing opinions on how good the SF-HD7 is, but it does work.

What was the last thing that you did to the console before it stopped working? You wrote that it makes noise or the optical block can't move, so I guess that this means that the worm gear can't turn?
Someone once wrote that his worm gear got worn out, so you might want to check if yours is ruined.

That as well can be it. If it is worn, you can try grooving it more with a knife, but be careful, OP.

Okay, It was never taken apart. I played GTA San Andreas on it nonstop for many hours without turning the machine off and it did have it's white cog screw adjusted once.

It also makes the noise when it moves but moves slowly.

Very likely the optical pickup is having a hard time moving foward/backward on it's rail. Means you need to remove the optical pickup and clean the holes in it where the metal bars slide into. and clean the metal bars themselves. After that lube it with lithium grease.

I SOLVED IT: I got a new PS2 fat and it's not making that noise. It's an SCPH-30001 R V5/V6 and i have no problems and no errors GTA. Is SCPH-30001 R V5/V6 a reliable console just like the 39001?

I believe his problem was simply the laser stuck on it's moving trail. If the laser cannot move, the plastic tab will click on the worm gear making a grinding noise as the PS2 turns the motor on trying to move it to the center...
