heyo, can anyone here tell me what the max addressable size for internal HD is via OPL? also, same limit for IDE vs. SATA? my modded network adapter has SATA interface. danke
1TB seems to be a safe size, although some people can get up to 2TB working. See here: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f98/what-ismax-ps2-hd-size-93120/
ah, got it. thanks very much for that link. super helpful stuff. 1TB SATA is what i have available so looks like i'll be fine there. especially since i plan to continue streaming almost everything from NAS anyway. just need internal HD for titles that don't cooperate (stuttering FMV, etc.) over the LAN. cheers!
the max HDD size is somewhere between 1-2tb afaik, but realistically, you shouldn't need more than 200gb. My PS2 has an 80gb HDD which is more than I'll likely need to have.
I've never seen PS2 with HDD bigger than 2TB so I assume that's the limit. I'm using 400GB hdd (372GB real) and it's working fine. All apps that doesn't support LBA48 i've put on first partition (that fits on first 137GB of HDD - LBA28).
^^ they be f*cked! (aka: multiple hdd's OR ps2's to hand) try for something in between, like a saga/group game sets as opposed to the whole internet on a hdd! :friendly_wink: .... if you want a redump/tosec set, good luck with that! have a SERVER in data capacity to hand and an T-10 industrial trunk to rip em in any reasonable timeframe! (won't speculate how many t's in the complete ALL regions ps2 set, a good few that for sure! list is ongoing and i have a handful of retails the dumpers haven't catalogued yet!)
Hardware limit: as of ATA-6, it is the 48-bit LBA limit of 144PB. Software limits: 1. Sony and old homebrew software: 137GB (28-bit LBA limit) 2. Most homebrew software: 1TB - due to the use of signed 32-bit values (2^31*512=1TB). 3. Physical limit of APA and everything else that deals with 32-bit values: 2TB. The HDD interface provided by your network adaptor is irrelevant. For #2, I wrote "most" because it's a safer assumption. Like with those patches for older PC OSes that did not support 48-bit LBA natively, there is always a risk that they will result in data loss. Since most homebrew developers never had a way to attach a 2TB disk to their consoles (and most likely did not even have a 2TB disk), support for disks larger than 1TB never really existed.
many thanks to all who responded...very helpful info. esp. sp193, really appreciate the limitation breakdown. 1TB is what i've got to install so all should be good esp. since hd will just be my backup method for those titles that don't want to stream their purty FMVs well across the LAN from NAS.
If you're gonna use a drive that big, you may as well keep all your games on it, as that should be more than enough for PS2 games assuming you're not a collector and have less than 5 million games
haha! yeah, little less than that. rockin about 300 from NAS. don't enjoy the prospect of moving them ALL, just the problem children so to speak. just happen to have a 1TB collecting dust, so....
You'll realize that it will not only be more convenient and cost less to run (since you only need one device active), the gaming experience will be unparalleled. Nothing can match the ATA interface. Plus if you ever want to get the "Sony" experience of using the HDD OSD or PSBBN navigator, your games must be on the HDD. This is the only way you can store your games as if you had downloaded them from the PSBBN (the PSN of those years).
