I've got 2 PS2 slims, one with modbo 4 and another with modbo 5 installed.
The modbo 4 one just boots to the regular menu and loads backups from disc just fine from there. The modbo 5 one only boots if there's a USB inserted with system files on it. Now I was wondering if I can setup this console so that it just boots to the regular PS2 menu, same as the modbo 4 one, without requiring the USB to be inserted all the time. Anyone got a resource on that?

boot into the chips setup menu, change default boot deive

To enter the Configuration Menu, hold TRIANGLE AND CIRCLE at power on

    Select Change boot mode :)

    ---
Circle – Boots ModBo Chip/system into PSX DVD Video mode. This forces the PS2 to either play PS1 games or DVD movies

Triangle – Forces the system to boot the Infinity Manager

Cross – Forces the system to bypass settings and boot to the Sony Browser with the ModBo chip enabled.

Start – This Disables the chip. Once this is done, tap the standby button to reset the system to finish disabling the Modbo chip. To Re-enable the Modbo chip you must place the system into standby

Select – This forces a Fast boot on PS2 games. Basically skipping the startup animation and Playstaion 2 Logo on disc boot

R1 – This boots a homebrew ELF file from the first memory card (mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF)

L1 – This boots a homebrew ELF file from the hard drive if installed (hdd0:/__boot/boot.elf)

    Hope this helps

Thanks a lot! That certainly helped to get it to boot directly to the browser.
Unfortunately, not so much luck getting the unit to actually play games.
Backup games are sometimes not recognized at all (no disk), sometimes recognized as DVD-Video and in fact, even official games don't play. Official ones are recognized as "PS2" sometimes, but when I start them I get a message "there is no data" on the screen. I'm not sure they did work before the modchip install either, to be honest. Anything obvious that I might be overlooking or could this very well be a bad laser? This is a PAL v15.

Edit: the 'H' pad is connected.

disconnect the 3v to the chip ( or software disable)

Tried that, no difference at all. So went nuclear and replaced the laser. Now all works flawlessly.
BTW @LeHaM I've ordered another modbo 4 and wil dump it when it arrives (might take long.. China shipping..)
Dumping fw from the 760 and modbo 5 that I have was no problem.

I don't think it will work, as it also needs compatible code on the clpd or what ever it is.

But I can dump a modbo 4 for you if you like.

Quite possible. Do you stock modbo 4's, and if so can we add one to my order if it hasn't already shipped?

Yeah I stock them. Your order may be in my car to send today. When I'm back at the car I will check and let you know.
