    Hi,

I have a collection of PS2 'Test' debug consoles some of which had network adapters connected - they seem to be normal SCPH-10350's but they have a sticker 'For Debugging Station' on them - i was wondering if anyone knew if they will work in retail PS2's also (i assume they would?) and if they are in any way different to a normal network adapter?

    Thanks

    Matt

Normal retail adapters work in debugs - at least in my experience for the LAN side of things - not sure about the other direction, though I would have thought that they would.

Do you have any pictures of your adapters? A while ago one of the assembler members did come across a slightly different design of the adaptor (the metal shielding on the back was a little different).

Does the HDD work with your adapters/debug? If so, what are their model numbers (both debug & adaptor)? Most earlier model debugs won't work with HDDs.

Yeah, I'd have thought they would work with retails too. Do the network adapters have any other writing on them?

    Hi,

Here's a quick photo i took of one.

re. the HDD - i;ve not ever tried using a ps2 HDD - does it need to be a specific HDD or can i use anything?

seems these network adapters are definatly interchangeable - i have around a dozen that are mixed some with the sticker some without - and they all seem to work on all the debug consoles i have here.

    Thanks

    Matt

It's not tied to a specific model drive, but it might not be compatible with all drives. I'm sure I've seen a list of definately working ones though for the hdadvance type software. I keep meaning to play around with that.

There's 2 levels of compatibility - the 1st is physical, as not all drives will fit onto the IDE/power connectors on the adapter - Western Digital drives typically don't fit, whereas Maxtors typically do. The 2nd level concerns the firmware on the drive - Sony's official HDD is a 40Gb Maxtor with modified firmware - official software, such as FF:XI will only work with the official HDD. Some 3rd party programs, like HDAdvance will work on either & don't check the firmware.

Now, with the debug PS2's - some of the earlier ones will not work with the official HDD (they typically fail to see it), although the LAN features of the retail adaptors usually seem to work OK & 3rd party HDDs that fit the adaptor will usually work ok (on my units, anyway).

What I'm wondering, is whether these 'debug' adaptors may work with the official HDD when connected to the ealier debug PS2's. I strongly suspect the debug/retail adapters are really identical to each other, but I am curious...

BTW, mattcp - if you do decide to part with any of your 'debug' marked adapters, I too would be interested in one, if only to try it out with an official HDD on one of my debug units.

Well, I got one of those from Mattcp (cheers chief) and it is 100% identical to the retail version I've got.
The sticker has data shifted around a bit compared to a retail but they are identical. I just thought it was cool so I bought it to compliment my TEST station.

Oh, the serial numbers are much lower than retails I noticed too - but m'eh.
