This video is a bit old since when I was about to post it here the forum was down for a few months. After replacing the laser on my PS2, I was cleaning the lens with a cotton swab and a bit of rubbing alcohol and then the screen froze. I restarted the PS2 and no sound or video. I made a video that goes a bit more in depth.
You shouldn't be cleaning an optical pickup with the machine on, nor using liquids on live electronics. And I hope by rubbing alcohol you mean electronics-grade 99% isopropyl alcohol - rubbing alcohol needs to stay in the bathroom, it has water in it.
hi MAL , i watched your video and read your description. I think there may have been a static discharge when you touched the lens while the console was on and you attempted to clean it. Or a short was caused while the console was on and conductive liquid touched the console , i could be wrong on both cases. If one of the 2 happened something would have most likely fried on the Motherboard. You could try and remove the DVD Drive entirely and turn the PS2 on and see if you get video. at least though PS2's are pretty cheap to buy now , also you may want to look into OPL ( Open PS2 Loader ) that way you don't have use the Laser anymore. keep your head up mate s8n
The controller logic is on the mainboard. I have this feeling that he may have fried something there, since the blue LED won't be activated by the MECHACON. :| But well, if disconnecting the optical block and/or motors can actually help, that would be great.
I just tried to remove the DVD Drive and it did nothing. I guess I'm just going to have to buy a new PS2.
Check fuse PS11 (http://www.trisaster.de/page/content/sony/ps2/fuse_gh-015.jpg). It is most likely that the BA5815FM driver IC is fried and causing a short circuit. Disconnecting the drive is not enough, you have to remove the IC (or lift the power supply pins) to get the PS2 to boot again. It can be caused by bad tracking and/or focus coils of the laser.
