I think my PS2 has just about had it. I was going to play a game, so I put the disc in and turned the system on. It was taking forever, and then I got the dreaded message, Disc Read Error. So, I just restarted the system because that's what usually works, but it didn't. So, I tried a few more times with no success. Thinking it might be the game, I tried a different one. Still didn't work. My PS2 is pretty old, it is one of the first ones, but I rarely use it, and I always take very good care of my systems. I am not too mad, because like I said before I don't use it much, but what I want to know is how much it would cost to get it fixed. I know some members here have had experience with faulty PS2's.

    Thanks :smt023

Few things to try, that don't involve opening or shipping it off to Sony:

The diagnostic mode business. Where you go to diagnostic mode, set it to on, put the disc in, and see if it works. This isn't really a solution at all, but it might hold you over for a few plays.

Compressed air: This helped both my "friend's" (the kid is an arsehole :-D ) and my PS2. For clarity, that means 2 PS2s, as that sentence really sucked. :smt043

Anywho, what you do is get say a can from staples, and let it rip into the open Disc Tray. I mean let the sucker loose. Then, give it a minute or 2, and put in a game and try it out.

If that doesn't work, definately don't get it repaired by Sony. I did that, and the damned thing broke again in 4 months. :angry

  3. Are they blue-backed CD discs, or normal DVDs? It's a common problem among older PS2s for the laser to lose power and not read CD discs over time. If you search around the internet, there are a bunch of DIY fixes you can do, but they all are just temporary solutions to a problem that will get worse.

I guess it kindof goes without saying, but check your discs and make sure they aren't fingerprinty/dusty.

They were both DVDs, and they were both very clean.

I will try the compressed air thing to see if it works. BTW, How much does Sony charge to fix PS2's.

    Thanks :smt023

Actually, I think it costs like $100 or $80, but if I were you, I would buy one of the newer ps2's since the fixed ones will break, too.

Perhaps this could be a good excuse to get one of the skinny ps2s?

Too much. Don't get it fixed by them--you're better off buying a new PS2 or a used one off eBay. Sony doesn't say how much it costs on their webpage, so you'd have to call their customer service line. :smt045

If you don't feel like getting another PS2, then grab a used one for around $100. Will last you longer than those lame Sony fix-it-up jobs.

Maybe, that is if I get one. I probably will, seeing as I want to finish Ratchet and Clank.

Is it true that the small ones heat up faster and thus freeze a game if its very CPU/GPU intensive?

Well, they are everywhere. The box says "Better price" on it. I was wondering whether it meant for the consumer... or sony?

  12. Apparently the problem that was causing the majority of Disc Read Errors has been fixed on the new slim PS2 (PStwo), so it might behoove you to take a look at that.

also isn't PSTwo cheaper than old one?
I've seen PSTwo for around AUD 200...

lately been thinking of getting PSTwo w/ mod chip...

The new PS2 technically is cheaper, as it has built in modem/ethernet ports. ;-)

But no HDD support. So HDD Loader isn't an option for those shady gamers.

I might opt in getting a used or refurbished old style PS2.

I'll give it a month until someone comes out with a boot disk for the PSTwo to let it play imports and back-ups since its already a flip-top design.

I personally hate those boot disc and etc...
call me lazy but can't be arsed to swap disc and all...
I want to play game not swapping disc crap... :-D

hence all my consoles - apart from collections - have the mod chip or what not to defeat the region lock out...

    cheers

  17. I haven't the $150 to try, but I'd imagine that with a spring or something to defeat the drive door switch and a Swap Magic CD/DVD, you could have imports rolling without even having to crack the warranty seal on the new PSTwo units...

And maybe it's just me, but I never found spending the 30 seconds to swap a bootdisc for an import to be so horribly aggrivating that I felt compelled to shorten my console's lifespan... that's just me though. :-( I guess if you can afford more than one unit of each console, go for it.

its a common problem that upset ps2 gamers/owners. i had the same problem too and i took really good care of it, but it still arrived. i send my ps2 to sony ..... 180$ (can) to repair it. i paid, they repeared it, they send it back, i played for 6 months and then it died again. i've bought a new ps2 since , and i don't have any problems with it (for now). but i've tried to repair my old one weeks ago with some websites, here's the best i found:

    http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars/1

sadly, in the middle of the operation, the power of the system died....
so if you what to try, take good precautions and follow everything closely. Ah, didn't i've said it would avoid the guarantee too? (im sure you knew it , but just in case...) but if your ps2 is one of the first , your
    guarantee is certainly avoid.

good luck if you try this! :smt023

Fix the piece of crap up, and then sell it on eBay. It will surely break in half a year, but hey--no skin off your back, eh? ;-) :smt083
