I have a PS2 and it's got a 120 GB IDE HDD with the old network adapter. I want to have more storage capacity. I hear that there is a way to hook up SATA HDD to it. What are you guys using?
AFAIR the only option is the 3rd party network adapter with SATA port (instead of IDE). Heard both bad and good things about 'em, so YMMV. Alternatively you could use a SATA > USB adapter, but you'd be stuck with the USB 1.1 speed which may affect your experience (and compatibility?). Not sure if there's any other option for using a SATA HDD directly with the console. If you can put the SATA HDD in a computer or NAS, you could connect it and the PS2 to the same network switch/router and use SMB which should give a better transfer speed. Again, haven't used it, so not sure which of all these options is best compatibility-wise.
There's also these types of boards that you use with official network adapters. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/SATA-ADAPTER-FOR-PS2-FAT-V1-0/32809586287.html
I have been using the Sugoi TR2535, allowing me to use any SATA HDD without modifications to the network adaptors I have. You can also use any SATA to IDE adaptor, as long as it fits. Those 3rd party network adaptors can be bad, IMO. I don't think we have a perfect clone to date, as they generally seem to be made for use with specific software....
What other adapters are people using that work with the PS2? I can't seem to find the one you're speaking of sp193.
Here you go: https://www.system-talks.co.jp/product/sata-tr2535.htm The reason why it's exclusive, is that it's a Japanese thing.
You could buy it from other websites, and/or with a proxy service. I got mine from Yahoo Auctions Japan in 2013. But you have to decide on how far you want to go for such a thing. For me, it was the draw from getting an adapter that fits perfectly in the SCPH-20400 enclosure and also connects to the expansion-bay network adapter without any other modifications.
