I have been doing some research on modchips for the PStwo SCPH-90004 [GH-072-42] PAL (the last version before the production stopped). The most important task for the modchip is enabling the unit to play PSX CD-R backups, and second most important is enabling it to play PS2 backups. Running homebrew from the memory card is also a plus.

The Duo 3 Ultra seems to fulfill my demands, and being avaliable in my area. However I have only been able to find a install diagram for the SCPH-9000x GH-070-42 and GH-071-42, so I am not sure if it will work.

    1. Is the Duo 3 Ultra compatible with the GH-072-42 motherboard?
    2. Is there anything negative about the Duo 3 Ultra?
    3. The Modbo 4.0 clone seems to be much more popular, is this a better chip? The difference is not clear to me.

    Thanks in advance.

Hmm, it seems like I'm a couple of years too late with this. Really no suggestions?

The ModBos are more popular, because they are cheap as hell today (you can get them for <2$ in China) and they are clones from one of the greatest Chips back in the day (Matrix Infinity).
You can probably use the diagram for the GH-071-42 model, most of the points are on the BIOS chip and this big IC with the small solder points.
If you can see the points on your mainboard, I would give it a shot.

EDIT: I just checked the diagrams for the ModBo 4 on the GH-072-42 motherboard, and apart from F and CX (which are not present on the Duo 3) they are pretty much the same, so I'm 99.9% sure that you can simply use the GH-071-42 diagram for the isntallation.

The Duo 3 Ultra uses the ICE code which will allow imports, domestic and backups of PSX and PS2 games. The plus is it will load anti-mod PSX games. The down is it won't force the video to NTSC or PAL, but since you are in PAL land using RGB or component will display NTSC games in colour.
You can use the Modbo 4 install diagrams to install the Duo3 just replace X with Y in the diagrams.

Mars Pro is another good choice for PAL systems, it is very solid and will boot do everything the Duo3 does. Only drawback is the menu can't be saved.

Modbo4 is the most popular but they are several chips for it with different firmwares, some use the original 1.93 firmware while other use a hacked/modified version [1.99/2.0]. The 1.93 is the only one that will work in the 90k PAL series. The 1.99/2.0 have problems not loading PSX games and only about 70% rate for PS2 games.
The 1.93 has 99.99% boot rate for PSX (excluding anti-mod games) and PS2 games.
The problem is only in the 90k PAL systems. NTSC 90k systems are not effected by this and will work with 1.99/2.0 but I really don't recommend using anything else than the 1.93.

Hm, I don't believe that I can load anti-mod games that are unpatched on my SCPH-90001 (NTSC-U) with a Modbo 4 1.99; any ideas as to why? Also, would you happen to be able to recommend a better chip using practically the same points on the board that's a bit more solid? I wonder how difficult it'd be to get a hold of a legit Matrix Infinity or one of the 1.93 Modbos, or would there be any point?

Honestly, I really want to get a hold of a DMS4 Pro and a good phat PS2 with the HDD and install the largest capacity HDD I possibly can without running into issues in it; but I'd also want to refurbish the optical drive, replace the fans, recap any bad capacitors (is this a problem with phat PS2s yet?), and possibly repaint the entire casing a solid white with black trim with a smexy matte finish along with attempting to replace the LEDs with something blueish.. This project would probably be a pain in the ass as it would take forever to track down all that I need, the DMS4 Pro would be the main issue, but I really want it for ToxicOS for it.

I know that last bit above is totally off-topic, but if anyone knows a good direction to point me in for my grand quest of my ideal PS2, feel free to send me a PM ;)

Bad caps are only really an issue with hardware that was released around the time of the Turbo Duo/Turbo Express/Game Gear and maybe NOMAD?

Someone has some DMS4 Pro for sale on the forum, I'm probably gonna go for the Ghost 2 v2 myself, I don't care about HDD functionality.

The capability of Duo 3 loading anti-mod PSX games is great news. I don't think any modchip for SCPH-90004 could pull this off. But if Mars Pro boot everything Duo 3 does, has he also capability for playing anti-mod games???? A solid chips is good, but a menu that cannot be saved seems like a problem, is the default settings good??

Funny how a Modbo 4.0 is supposed to work with these but perhaps Matrix Infinity don't consider it's supposed to be a clone.

I picked up a 90004 recently so I'll be wanting to chip it with something, but what..

Reason you are struggling for info is the infinity was out of production before the 9xxxx series came out. So all info is for modbos.

Use the modbo 4 installation, but look up the infinity transistor fix on the w point and all should be well.

You need to turn off multi disk PSX support iirc on any modbo to get them to work.

Maybe not quite relevant but my SCPH-77007 has a v1.99 Modbo 4.0 and it will run PSX games but only if I power the machine while holding circle. Another thing I observed is that unlike my 1.93 Modbo 750 it actually displays the PSX logo.

Is this an case where they modified the 750 not to show the PS1 logo for 1.93 but left it intact in 1.99? Also one thing I'd suggest is trying a 760 on that GH-072. IIRC 760s are ALWAYS 1.93 (apart from the replaced logo which is neat too) and have a smaller footprint than the 4.0 or the 750.

All my modbos are always 1.93. I dont sell the 1.99 intentionally.
