PS2 slim funny problem: Need to open cd door once before it works.

Not very familiar with PS2 and fixing them so sorry in advance if this somehow is a well known issue. A quick google search did not bring up anything quite like it.

When I power on the console with a disc in it, it will not read it. I can hear the motor/laser messing around a bit but the disc does not go into full speed spin and it just goes to the setting menu. It does that everytimes.

If I open and close the disc door once it is in the setting menu, then it starts to spin properly and boots the game. I can then play for hours with no issues, seems to be loading well and fast and laser does not seem to be struggling. I have no idea what glitch is happening.

I am using original discs only and as far as I know this system is not modded but have not taken it appart so I can't say for sure.

Anyone seen/fixed this before?

 

I would take it apart. First blow out all the dust and clean the laser. Also clean the worm motor, spindle and rail's. Add a small dab of fresh white grease to the rails and worm motor's shaft. Check the disc stop and clean that as well. Retest and see if that solve's the problem.

 

I guess this is what I will end up doing, just clean everything up.
