OK, the longest I've owned a PS2 of my own was for about a month when the slims first came out, but my flatmate said I could go ahead and mod his over Easter, as it only gets used for the occasional game of Singstar. Anyway, I installed the chip and reassembled the console, but now the DVD drive assembly doesn't appear to do anything at all. Discs don't spin up, the laser assembly doesn't move at all and the console browser shows nothing inserted. It was working beforehand and, as far as I'm aware, it wasn't particularly temperamental, so any idea what could be the cause?
Lid switch problems will do all of the above. Could also be a blown fuse or a badly installed modchip. I've seen such installs kill audio and make the console read CDs as PS2 games and PS2 games as DVDs.
Yes I have seen this myself where the pin on the lid had snapped off, once fabricated a new one it was off again.
I did think about the lid and tried removing it and holding down the two switches, but still no joy...
Slightly off topic... As basically ALL switches "pressed" equals "lid closed", and any single open switch means "lid opened", a broken pin or switch can also be fixed by replacing the switch with a shorting wire (=permanently pressed switch). This has the bonus of making the machine more reliable (as long as the remaining switches still work).
The drawback of shorting the switch permanently is you can't use multi-disc game. Since the game can't sense the lid is up then down, it won't start the next disc.
Not true! If you short ALL the switches however, multi-disc games wont work, no, but there are multiple switches and as long as at least *one* of the switches still works, opening and closing the lid will still be detected even if all the rest of the switches are permanently shorted...
kungmidas speaks the truth, I did the same with a DC that had one of the switches broken. bridged the broken one and the remaining working one kept the lid function
Have you tried removing the chip? I know some ps2's are booby trapped against being modded. Hopefully you haven't been caught out by that as it's not fixable. But if it works after removing the chip and making sure you don't leave any shorts & didn't break any tracks or cables, then at least you'll be back at square one.
