There's a few things you can try before replacing it. As stated above, clean the laser. I use a cotton swab ("Q-tip") and alcohol and it's worked wonders... had drives not read anything and suddenly work perfectly after cleaning. You can also adjust the pot sensitivity but if it's not reading original discs there's a good chance that this won't fix the problem. As for it spinning slowly... I believe that that's normal for it to go slow until it recognizes there's something there, then it'll spin up faster. When did the problem start? Was it working fine before you opened it up?
