Ok, I have searched everywhere, and I can't find the information I'm looking for. I was looking into buying this unit from a member on the forum, but I need to know more about it and he doesn't seem to know much about it either. I want to know if I can remaster discs to be ran as backups on the system. Let's say if I made a backup of my Kingdom Hearts disc, remastered the imagine, and burnt it to a DVD-R, would it work? Also, can this model use an HDD with HDLoader? I know the laser will eventually die, and this seems like a good alternative to not use the drive. Also, any information on repairs for this model? I need all the information for this PS2 I can get. Can it use memory cards?
A PS2 Test will NOT play backups. CD-R/DVD-R as Master disc only. A PS2 Test will NOT play DVDs. A PS2 Test *may* support the hard drive (depends on the unit's firmware). A PS2 Test *can* use memory cards. If you want to play backups, get a modded PS2 slim. It'll be more reliable. -hl718
I understand that it wont play movies. However, I've heard you can patch a disc as a master disc, there's a free legal utility out there made by some guy named Loser, correct? Also, I have no idea where to get a modded PS2 Slim. I'm having trouble find a reliable seller for one, and I don't ever see modded consoles being sold here. Trust me, I would much rather have a modded PS2 slim. However, the only chips I see people using is modbo 4 or whatever, and it doesn't support gameshark or action replay. Also, there are differences between the models of PS2 Test units. What you said didn't really answer any questions about the model I was asking about.
Everything I said is specific to that model. Yes, if you patch to Master Disc succesfully it will work. As for the hard drive, like I said it depends on the firmware. Those models had multiple firmware revisions. The only way to know if it will work is to test it out. Slot in a hard drive and network adapter and see if it works. -hl718
Haha, I know how you feel. I turned the guy down because of all the annoyances with the test unit. I'm in the process of acquiring a modified slim ps2. I understand I can't use hdloader on it, but I'm fine with that. This is one of the newer slim PS2s, so the drive should be fine. The chip is modbo 4.0, seems there's a newer version of it is out and it fits my expectations, so I'm going for it. I'll let you guys to how it turns out when I get it
Shame really, HDLoader is awesome! I've sorta "retired" my PAL unit with HDLoader though - as I now own mostly all the NTSC-J games I want I just have my fatty NTSC-J PS2 plugged in. Good luck with the slim though.
Haha, thanks. I might eventually buy a test unit though for collector's reasons, but for now, a modded slim will do fine.
Alright, my modified PS2 is here. SCPH-90001, brand new, only opened up to solder in the chip. It works great, and I love it. Although, I wish I would have known it would underscan on the fancy TVs here, but it shouldn't do it on my TV at home.
Oooh, a new slim. May I ask how well it holds the disc? Reason being is that my old slim used to scratch my games, I think it was the laser's fault.
Seems to hold the discs pretty well. It has this little piece in it that seems like it's made to stop the disc, kind of has a rough surface. I'll take pictures later. If it was the laser, a new slim shouldn't do it. As far as I know, this is the latest model released in the US. So, they are built with better lasers than previously used. I'm sure this version is pretty revised and without alot of the issues your old one had. It seems to have the powersupply built into it, so no more clunky cabes that look like I can use it as some medieval weapon.
The orange flat cable got bent incorrectly because you turned it off with the laser positioned on the center and then stored it. The cable then "learned" that position. There's a reason why the PS2 Slim pulls the laser to the edge of the tracking rail when you power it off with the power button: To keep the flat cable parked in a good position. So if you don't want it to scratch your discs, aways power it off with the power button then remove the power plug while it is on the standby mode.
I have a PS2 TEST DTL-H30001 (without "S") and it does not seen memory card. It's normal or it's a hardware issue ?
Bad Memory card slot. Have you tried both slots ? Is the card a legitimate SONY card ? There's knockoffs that look exactly like SONY's but does not really operate as a original card (I.E.: properly)
both my old 30001 and 10000 tests had/have this issue on occasion.. it's odd.. best thing to do i find is to go to browser and fiddle with the card until it shows, then it's all happy- i had NO success getting it to recognize n game although i'm sure enough fiddling would do it... it might be oxidation on the memory card pins the knockoffs (128mb) I just picked up oddly work better than the original sony cards in this respect, but the datel card wouldn't show up ever on either test... I'm banking on the pins needing cleaning, I just haven't taken the time to really care about the test that much...
If you take the time to dismantle the TEST, I suggest you gently bend the pins on the controller connector (the pins on the memory card slots) up so they have a bit more of pressure on the connection surface. Now a random comment of mine: Don't you find funny that these TEST PS2s bear the name "Debugging Station" or "Debugstation" on their stickers while they have NO debug ability in them ? Isn't that pretty misleading ?
No slot issue. PS1 memory card works. My PS2 MC is a 64mo (labeled sony, but according UJ this is a chinese copy) and works on retail 10k PS2. I don't understand why it does not work on a TEST 30k. 30k PS2 is supposed to have a newer firmware than 10k, no ? However official 8mb should work (not tested yet).
l_oliveira- iirc they do have some debug support in them, you just need the firewire/usb target boxes to enable communication with them- but I haven't read much up on the subject. i.e. do the target boxes work on a retail as well... or even what one one looks like... as to naming... I'd honestly see it as more of a legacy holdover from the PS debugging stations which share all lack of debugging- The system is for "debugging"- aka- playtesting, rather than development debugging... same as the ps3 tests also allow... Dr.Wily- I've been meaning to try this, but I believe the issue is as i say, dirty contacts- and some cards use a thicker pcb+case as to push against the contacts harder... I can definitely assure you that sony did not make any first party 64mb cards, there's been a massive run of ridiculously authentic looking cards going up for sale on ebay and elsewhere... one giveaway is that the packaging uses the part number scph-10020, the same as the original 8mb. As to compatibilities between test and retail units- considering the amount of idiotic things sony did to the dvd drive, removal of dvdsupport in the rom, and overall questionable compatibility issues, I would not be surprised if their methods for authenticating magicgate, or even the contact block alone is changed as well... From my experience, my 64mb datel refuses to do anything in the tests, but works fine in the tool and retail ps2's, but the far more modern 128mb knockoff cards i have work without a problem on the tests... (although the jiggling issue still remains). I'd get an official sony card, put a few files on it with a real ps2, and start from square one. You need a reference point before you start screwing around with oddbal hardware that is more or less bruteforced into working on the ps2...
The mechacon chip authenticate the memory cards. Because the TEST consoles have a different mechacon firmware, it's possible that their behavior is different from what you observe on a retail. I don't have dev consoles here for testing such stuff, so I can't really say anything on this topic. But I do fully agree with defor for the reason I just mentioned on the previous paragraph.
