after a nice 13 years on the production seems the ps2 is about to be gone forever: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/12/sonys-playstation-2-finally-goes-gentle-into-that-good-night/ i feel it is a loss now that we do not have backward compatibility to it.
Current official news only applies to Japan. How long that'll last though, I don't think will be much.
I'm sure other regions will follow. That's too bad but they wouldn't keep making them forever anyway.
And its still selling more in Japan then the old Nintendo DS models! Personally I was never a big PS 2 fan, the graphics always looked muddy to me compared to the Dreamcast, not sure why. Final Fantasy 12 and some of the later titles really looked nice graphically though. It isn't possible. Unless he played a string of the worst games released for it and then gave up. Otherwise, the PS2 really does have something for everyone! That being said, PS2 had a great run, & it is definitely past the time it needs to be laid to rest (officially).
There is always someone who says that. For some reason they think an opinion based upon ignorance is somehow an opinion and not ignorance.
Hands down in terms of it's line up the PS2 was the greatest system of all time. It wasn't the most powerful, it wasn't the best looking, early on the DDEs rivaled the RROD but the PS2 had EVERYTHING EVERYTHING, hell it even had ported Saturn and Dreamcast games. The Sega Ages series was a Major PS2 selling point for me. Hating on the PS2...I have to question if you're even a true gamer. Unless you have some moral objection to Sony's business practices. Take out the Sega end of things on the PS2 and you still have Okami, God of War, Cave Shmups, almost every major Neo Geo game in collection form, The amazing Sly Cooper games, Ico, Persona 3 and 4, The Tales series, The final REAL Fire Pro game. Mega man X7 and X8. Plus if I'm forgetting games that remain exclusive it's backward compatible with PS1 games and that's 1000s more games to the already 1000s of games the PS2 had. The PS2 isn't my favorite system, that will always be the Saturn. But I can't deny it's the greatest system of all time. it's almost impossible to argue that unless you're some idiot hipster. The Only answer I'll accept against the system is a Moral objection to Sony.
It took me a really long time to convince myself to get a PS2, after it killed the Dreamcast, but it does probably have the largest, most diverse library of games on any system. Where else could you play Okami, GTA, Socom, COD, Kingdom Hearts, FFX, Jak and Daxter, Burnout, Gran Turismo 4, and Gradius V, in a row? Yeah, the Xbox had better online, a hard drive, and was more powerful, but at the end of the day the PS2 had a sea of games.
The PS2 DID NOT kill the Dreamcast, there are a billion theads on the topic of what killed the Dreamcast. I didn't get a PS2 Until a year or so AFTER I got a 360 and even then at that moment in time awesome games WERE STILL coming out for it. Rez and Virtua Fighter 4 Evo were my first games for it. I got Kloonia 2 for it as well but didn't hold on to it, wish I did it's a great game.
Its funny was out and about today. Still saw a brand spanking new PS2 for sale in Big Box Stores here in the US
I've never owned a PS2. Never really cared to own one or even play one. I have too many games as it is, however, I would like to buy one with a complete set of the Sega Ages games (including the shit games) but that's all I'd buy. Oh wait, I'd buy a Joystick too. I can't stand the Sony Pad ever since the very first PlayStation. The latest controller they use now is basically still the same thing.
The Sega Ages are well worth owning, WELL WORTH OWNING! PS2 Rez is also worth it. As is Shinobi and... ok pretty much everything Sega put out on the PS2.
its official world wide production and sales have ended it was a really good run i didn't get a PS2 until 2010 when the prices at gamestop briefly dipped to $40 and only after i found out about FMCB i have a V7 and am loving it i recently bought a 400 gig hard drive for it and its running like a champ now its time to snipe all the good games for less then $5 from gamestop before they send them to there warehouse for there later retrostop store shutters
"Greatest system of all time" is a pretty strong claim, and personally I disagree. It had some great games, no doubt. But in terms of the quality of its best games and the overall experience of the system, I think there are several systems that are better. Keep in mind that this is an OPINION. Acting like it's an absolute fact that it's the greatest system of all time is idiotic. I don't care what you will "accept" as an response. You are not the supreme judge of videogame hardware.
