Just got my TOOL, and the drive doesn't work. won't eject.
I've opened the system with the utmost care, and removed the DVD drive. Even with my hands I'm unable to fully open the tray, and the system doesn't do much either. Before opening it up, I could here a click, but the tray refused to eject. Now, it comes out half an inch (couple centimetres) but sticks, sits, and then pulls it back in. Process is repeated twice until I press the button again- and does the same crap.

Is this an issue I can fix, or am I facing the need to get a replacement eject mechanism? If you need it, I can make a video, but it really doesn't show much else.

Any help is appreciated- I'd really like to get my drive working!

You'd have to disassemble it down to the gears and fix the mismatch in the gearing.

You figure that's it? I'll go check and see if that works.

    Thanks.

Oh Great one, how far is the limit of your vast knowledge?

Fix'd. Didn't even have to open up the "gearbox". Just removed the tray and put it back in. Go figure.

When I got my PS2 TEST from someone on here, the drive wouldn't open, was damaged during shipping. I opened it up and just had to realign some gears. also changed the band. Works perfect now

Oh great. Put it all back together and now it's stuck again.

    Good grief!

Take it apart, give it a clean in warm soapy water with a toothbrush (no metal parts and not electronic parts of course), put it back together, align it and put a little sewing oil on the gears and shaft, ensuring that it is working well.

I'll give that a try. I've seen disk drives before- this one was not particularly as greasy as they should be. Also quite dusty.

The dust makes it sometimes lock as old grease also sticks and becomes thicker. Make sure you clean it well, and use a good oil. As I said, sewing oil is best :)
Take your time, and be careful. They are not your ordinary console ;)

Odds are there is slop on the gear, if the tray can waggle left to right when open, it's got too much slop and you need
to shim it a bit so it won't bind.

You also need some traxxas silicon gear grease.

OK, I've tried everything. Cleaning the gears and rubber band, checking everything, oiling with sewing oil and silicon gear grease, and nothing is working.

    From my extensive "diagnostics" measures-
-It opens perfectly with the plastic top off the drive (exposed laser)
-with all the casing on, it won't even eject
-with the metal off, the drive appears to have issues lowering the reader spindle chassis, and so the tray won't eject.
-If I assist the laser and spindle chassis, everything works fine.

God dammit. I'm buying a new drive. Whoever can sell me a replacement can have this god-forsaken piece for free. Maybe I'm just not seeing an issue right under my nose, but I'n not necessarily caring at this point. PM if you've got one.

Try ejecting, then put the top on?

Is it generally ok to use these things sideways, in the horizontal position? If so, lay it down and try ejecting. After I adjusted the gears on my TEST, it wouldn't eject in the vertical position, but if I layed it down, it'd eject perfectly. (thats when I replaced the band, now it ejects horizontally or vertically)

    Tried both.

I haven't tried replacing the band, though. Any special band I should try?
