I got in a bunch of TOOL units, and I reset the password.

For the sake of people who don't know, here's the process.

    1. Make sure front switches are set to DVD and TOOL
    2. Turn unit on
    3. Hit tab like mad when it get past POST
    4. Type "tool single"
    5. at bash, type "passwd" and reset password
    To run a disc:
    • cd ..
    • cd /usr/local/sce/bin
    • ./dsedb -r
    • Start game: reset 2 100
    • Stop game: Reset 0 0
If I try to run ./dsedb -r I get the following "unable to connect -network is unreachable

Am I just not remembering or is there a host / PS2 communication issue?

Did you reboot into the normal Linux mode? DSNETM has to boot on the PC side of the TOOL, for DSEDB to have something to talk to.

BTW, the password for the PC side of the TOOL is never known because nobody was meant to log into it, if you don't already know about it. DSEDB is supposed to be run from the development PC, from across the network.

I've run it locally via CLI before on other tools, I will try from network.

I've run it locally before too. But I really just meant that it was not meant to be done that way (but you could, if you wanted).

The important thing is that DSNETM runs. In tool single mode, I don't think that DSNETM is booted, hence my question above.
As part of the TOOL's bootup process, you should see (when a VGA-compatible screen is connected to the SBC board) the MRP driver being loaded before DSNETM. If the MRP driver cannot load (i.e. due to a hardware problem on the PS2 side), then DSNETM will fail to load (and hence no DECI2 tool will work).

If you cannot catch the messages at boot, I think that you should be able to look at them again with dmesg (since you now have root access).

Check the dvd drive cable. Sometimes those get caught in the cpu fans and tear, spent hours working on one for a client before i noticed a small tear on the cable

All the units are still sealed, I'd hate to break the seals but I may have no choice.
