    I recently soft modded a ps2 fat (5X) with FMCB 1.93.

Today, installed (a known compatible) maxtor HDD, jumper to (Master).

I didn't opt for the IDE to USB (then WINHIIP) route, instead choosing to format the drive directly via (the now outdated) HDLoader - which formatted the new drive ok.

When I went to OPL I could now see the drive. But couldn't see any way of how to backup my games.

I had been careful up to this point, correct guides, researching everything thoroughly - got overly confident and decided to use a suggested elf HDGameInstaller - I inserted an original game disc and pressed install, the menu was hard to read and left the settings as default, but it installed the game ok.

I went back to OPL and selected the HDD, loaded the game (Vampire Night), it ran it quicker, but at the gun cal screen I couldn't calibrate, I think I must of checked the guns and pressed reset - but was greeted with the red light unable to turn green, thus no more power on... The light remains red. Pretty damn gutted right now.

im trying to work out whether it's a copy protect issue that has caused the ps2 to fault (was I supposed to burn the game as an ISO and patch it all first?) or it's a part/fuse fail which just seems a little coincidental tbh

I mainly only wanted to run my legitimate games via a HDD so I didn't have to change disc!
I'm really hoping that I haven't just killed this thing.

Take the drive out, sounds like a co-inky dink to me but maybe the IDE drive put an extra strain on a weak PSU?

Yes I have removed the drive, no good. I'm still getting power, but I can't find anything related to what causes it too fail to power up. I have also tried switching the power, removing memory card etc...

Does it power up for a little and goes back to red light?

Sounds like you've coincidentally run into a hardware failure. :/
No, it has nothing to do with HDLGameInstaller, FMCB or OPL. Just your console alone.

As @Riki has mentioned, try the console without the HDD and network adaptor connected. It is possible for some of the IC links to go. Personally, the expansion bay's 12V IC link within my SCPH-39006 died while I was testing the prototype versions of FHDB (and the whole expansion bay became useless). These consoles are already quite old anyway.

Does the reset button make the usual clicking sound, when you press it? If not, maybe it has gotten stuck.

(had a dog rip out a dvd drawer, busted exterior, various other issues but NEVER this, EVER!)
    ...
take the lan card off completely (no hdd present obviously) and if it's still remains in the red, there's clearly in internal issue. (as for timing of things going wrong right at a specific moment, that tech gets destroyed and i move on, patience and serenity DOESN'T go inline with my interests. finite commodity)
    ...
i can't advise really, did a web search on the issue, seems quite a common problem, though reasons vary. (i won't put myself through it, if i can't fix it in one sitting, out the window it flies and the hunt for a replacement is on)
take the full console apart, give it a gratuitous servicing, and reassemble.
as for the electronic issue, hope you can sort it?! :wink-new:
    good luck!

    Thanks guys, much appreciated responses...

@riki it flicks to green for a second, then to red. No booting so I guess one of these IC links are to blame.
@sp193 thanks for confirming that - good to know its simply down to hardware failure, not me screwing up. The hard drive was burning hot when I removed it, shame it didn't fix the issue though.
@amiga1200 that's great, thanks - will probably take it apart and have a look but I'm no expert on IC links or how to fix them. Like you said, I'm already looking for a new one, don't think I'll be using an internal HDD this time, I was pretty satisfied with ESR patching - thanks again

OK, I've disassembled. After checking all the ICs I have found PS15 (an smb) to be dead. For The 'emotion engine' apparently!

    EDIT:
I've replaced the ps15 with a pico fuse - and we have power again.

however (!) I have now coincidentally run into a failed USB port, which when you try to plug in or adjust the port, it forces the whole console to switch off!

not sure what can be done short of swapping them out?

i picked up another earlier 3XXX model today, with network adapter, so still not giving up on the HDD - will probably risk reinstalling it.
