    Hello all,

I recently got a fat PS2 but it doesn't seem to read discs. It powers up fine and spins the disc but it never loads the game. I took it apart and thoroughly cleaned it, lens too, and it would start to read a game but then stop. I figured it was a broken laser. So I purchased a new one on ebay and installed it. But now it won't even spin the disc. The new laser moves and adjusts but the disc never spins.

It's a scph-50001. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Anyone here can tell you that I have the most experience with broken PS2s. Ever. I have a list...

    Did you...
-unsolder the antistatic blob on the laser?
-take it back out and put it back in again?
    -break/bend the ribbon cable?
-unplug the laser's ribbon cable from the board?
-buy a Sony when you needed a Sanyo or vice versa?

Come back after checking all of that.

Antistatic blob? I didn't even know that was necessary.
I took it out but haven't put it back again
i think the ribbon is ok, I fairly careful with it, I'll double check.
I checked, they're virtually identical parts.

    Thanks so much!

It is nessecary. It is normally put on so during shipping, the laser does not get damaged by static. And, my pleasure! Happy to see another PS2 getting fixed.

You make claims like this a lot. I disagree however.

Yup. Follow the instructions and remove the solder blob.

Incidentally, you should check with both CD and DVD games. Chances are the CD ones will still work, which is evidence the laser is going. Cleaning the lens and under the lens would be the first port of call before ordering a new laser mech, but you should find that it will work fine now.

I had a problem with mine, even after I bought two lasers and removed the anti static blob, though I should've sprung for the newer laser. Even with the laser replacements, I couldn't get the system to play a movie dvd. I think a fuse or something broke on mine, but I use it for HDD games.

Removed the solder blob and the new laser works perfectly.

Thanks so much for all of your help!

I have a laser on it's way to me, and this blob freaks me out. I don't have a soldering iron nor do I know anyone who has. I wonder if I can just heat like a screw driver on the stove and use that?

Buy a soldering iron or you'll be either buying a new laser or paying a hospital bill.

Thanks for the friendly advice, but I'll probably stick to my idea. I'll heat up a paperclip instead of screwdriver though.

As already posted, your idea very likely will just damage the laser ribbon cable.

You can get a solder Pencil Iron for just a few bucks. You'll need rosin core (not solid) solder to first tin the iron tip so it can quickly draw off the blob of solder without melting the ribbon cable.

Pretty sure it's on a PCB, ps2 laser units have no built in ribbon.

    Bad_ad84 is right.

Now what does that tell you when the guy giving advice to the noob doesn't know what he's talking about?

Calm your titties, nerds. There's always more than one way to do things.

There is more than one way to do things, but there are the wrong way of doing things, like heating up a screwdriver or paperclip to 600F.

Oop, I was thinking the Wii Laser I replaced, assumed the PS2 had a similar design. Well, a pencil iron should still be used to remove the anti-static solder blob.

Wouldn't it be easier to just use braid rather than do that?
