I appear to have missed this Just reduce the price of the original and bring out some games....get with the programme But if as rumoured a PS2 price drop before christmas to about £50.........definately game over
Sadly, Sony has no major console selling titles this year. Ratchet and Clank is a major game, but not something that will move consoles. Unreal Tournament 3 is coming out before the 360 version, but will also be on the PC. 360 still has Halo 3 to support sales, and Mass Effect is coming out soon. Wii has Super Mario Galaxy and Brawl, coupled with the fact that Nintendo is most likely going to lower the production of the Wii so it sells out.
Yeah, that's Japan's "just enough" business strategy. It's a pretty interesting strategy, we talked about it in class the other day. They were apparently the first to start doing this.
That's what they did though. They aren't going to just take a huge loss to lower the price. Instead they cut costs to help them cut the retail price. I do wish they would have kept the PS2 GS chip in there. But oh well I guess.
Whenever i decide to get a PS3, it will be the 80GB. This, for me, it's just like a Xbox360 Core. pointless.
I have to agree, you don't need any of what they cut out, and it makes it more attractive when it can be had for significantly less. Atleast so far there's no story that PS2 BC will be cut out of all models. So if you want it, you can pay for it. I don't and don't want to pay for it either.
Do any of the current Japanese models come without the EE-chip? I am about to place an order for a Japanese 60GB model and would really be dissapointed if it would not play PS2 titles.
The Japanese machines still advertise the PS2 compatability and the models are still the same (20 and 60gb) and more importantly the same price it's very likely that it still has hardware emulation. As Japanese gamers are only likely to have one or two machines at most and as PS2 titles still sell in large numbers, Sony would be suicidal to remove the PS2 emulation from the PS3 in Japan. I have a Japanese PS3 and it runs everything I throw at it except a few odd PS1 games.
they're cutting BC, which was a feature they used to hype to ps3 over the 360, as MS acted liked they really didn't care about it either. So it's just funny to see Sony eat more of their words actually. Cutting out things they once marketed to just make it cheaper is laughable, as it still has little to no games worth the purchase, and only a handful of consumers even give a shit about bluray. Even if this was designed to bring over some ps2 users, why would they do it if they can't at least play their old games on the cheapest ps3 version out? They could have cut internal wifi over BC, as lots of people who are gaming on the ps2, and could be swayed by this new price, probably don't give a damn about wifi in their homes.
I'm one of them, I'd rather ditch Wifi and keep the GS for PS2 support. Or ditch some gigs of HD space for it. It would be nice to know just how much the GS cost to put in there.
The memory card readers were so worthless Other than that, Sony needs to remain competetive, and this will definitly help boost their holdiay sales.
http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2006/05/09/cheaper-ps3-loses-hdmi-slots-wi-fi-40gb/ IT DOESN'T HAVE HDMI! Cheapest Blu-Ray player with no HDMI socket. Now I know component is still good for hi-def gaming, but c'mon, most people don't know their 720p from their 1080i, all they know is that the god of Which? and other such techno mags state HDMI as the big shit to have in connectivity. If this is true then what does this show for the 2 SKU PS3/360 contest? Man I only just found out about the omittence of HDMI, this PS3 is some bastard child of hell. The lack of PS2 hardware, HDMI and Wi-Fi gives the impression this is the Astra of Sony's VXR range... I feel ill.
Haha. It definitely has HDMI, according to official pictures: http://www.scee.presscentre.com/Content/Detail.asp?ReleaseID=4434&NewsAreaID=2 What is interesting is the fewer vents for heat. I read that one of the chips is 65nm, but I don't know which (I am guessing the CELL). That means a cooler running less power hungry machine?
Well is a royal mess to rave about the BC against MS and then remove it, but honestly, who cares? If sony cuts PS2's price to $99 then you can get almost 2 PS2 units for the difference between the 80GB PS3 and the 40GB one. Thats a completely different thing with the X360, since the Xbox is dead and its almost impossible to get a new unit today, so if your Xbox is broken X360BC is virtually the only way to play your old games.
I like this idea. I think it's a positive step and in no way is the PS3 40G as bad as the 360 Core. Ok, so you might lose backwards compatibility card reader slots and fancy chrome effects but on the plus side you're getting a next gen console - Hard drive equiped with HD support. Sans the BC it's destined to provide the same amount of entertainment as the 360 as long as the developers get up off their arses and start churning out A1 titles. If you look at the 360 core you can't do shit with it until you fork up the rest of the cash for a Hard drive.
