I have a 60 GB PS3 (CECH-A01) that I got off of eBay a while back that doesn't have the original BD Drive with it. I haven't looked into how to fix this, but I do know that I can't just slap any old drive out of a ps3 in it, it won't work. Are there any PS3 experts here that are able to help me out with this problem?
From experience, you have 2 solutions: 1. Either you're on a 3.55 firmware or below and then you can use a homebrew firmware and remarry a different blu-ray drive to the PS3, http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Remarry_Bluray_Drive; 2. Get someone to swap the lockout chip on the BD logic board onto a working logic board. These guys https://www.consoledoctor.co.uk/ did for me about 2 years ago, the PS3 is still working like a charm Hopefully option 1 is possible for you otherwise you're a little stuck(without the original BD logic board), bear in mind, I'm sharing my experience from 2 years ago, things might have progressed.
The console is above OFW 3.55, so a downgrade is going to have to happen, I've started looking around, but I haven't found anything newer than 2012 on downgrading a ps3. I'm checking out the remarry link you provided, and hopefully that will help me get to where I need to be. you wouldn't happen to know where I can get what I need to downgrade the system to 3.55? A lot of vendors no longer have the tools and hardware in stock for the process.
Well, it is a CECH-A01, so the console is NAND, so you will need a Nand-downgrader. Most people go with a Xbox360 Nand Clip, and a programmable Teensy 2.0
I have done a ton of NAND downgrades. You'll need to read through bailey's guide. Some stuff is dated but for the most part its on point. http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?p=387785#post387785 here is what my hardware looks like: http://imgur.com/a/tx50k If you have any specific questions let me know.
If only downgrading was possible on the Super slim models At this point, I don't think it's ever gonna happen. But there is always hope.
Yeah, basically without the Bluray drive's board you're SOL with OFW. Worst part is (incase you haven't figured it out), is that without that board, it will black screen for ANY game/app, not just disc-based games (Netflix won't even work).
It should possible to downgrade these. but only the lowest downgrade is to their factory firmware. And since 3.55 and lower has the exploit the super slims and late slims are SOL. Perhaps one day they will figure out how to lower the firmware to 3.55 on these models. I'm not sure what the restriction is that is stopping them. There is a tool for super slims that allows DLC to be installed. That's really the only movement I've seen on the super slim front. Or buy my cobra ODE that I have for sale in the marketplace
The reason that the Super Slim can't be properly hacked is because the various keys for it are unknown. If anyone remembers, the hacker GeoHot leaked keys for the PS3 about 5 years ago and that's when PS3 modding really took off. He was sued by Sony, but they later came to an agreement that he wasn't allowed to reverse engineer and hack Sony products anymore. Now he's working for Google.
