Hi. I have a CECH-3001A slim PS3 I bought for parts "No video" on Ebay. To my surprise, when I got the console I plugged it in and hooked up an HDMI and the console actually powered on and displayed video just fine, but upon connecting my PS3 controller via USB to sync it the system shut off completely and now it won't come back on. I press the power button, the light turns green and immediately within 3 seconds the whole system shuts off with the light.

Where would I begin looking to see what the problem is? Does anyone else know what this problem is and what fixed it? My first instinct is to get an aftermarket PSU and replace it but the problem may lie somewhere else.

Power supplies on ebay are pretty cheap. You could get a new one and replace it. You could take apart the old power supply and check it for burns or find out if it smells like it was burnt. If not, look for bad caps, test components with a multimeter, and stuff like that.

Actually, first thing, try a new power cable if you already have a spare laying around.

The power shuts off no matter what HDD is plugged in.

I took apart the PS3 entirely and put it back together and for some reason it worked fine for like an hour, and then the power issue started happening again.
    I am very confused now.

It could be solder balls under the cpu/gpu.
Sounds a lot like a problem that I had aswell.

If that was the case then it wouldn't power on. Symptoms leading up to that is the system getting hot and shutting off before it overheats, but will work again once it's cooled down. If the system is already cool, and doing a cold start up, and still doesn't want to power on, then that's not the issue.
